1966 Volkswagen Beetle

Highlights

  • Desirable model year
  • Resprayed in 2005
  • Perfect amount of patina

The Appeal

Representing the golden age in freedom and motoring, the VW Beetle is an iconic model that challenged the likes of the Fiat 500 and Mini Cooper as one of the first small city cars on the market.

This particular model originated in Finland but was imported to the UK in 2018 after having been resprayed. In great condition inside and out with an ideal amount of patina, this car has clearly been very well cared for. While its Bahama Blue paint gives it great presence and compliments the body beautifully, it is not a colour often seen on the Beetle

The Interior

  • Plenty of patina
  • Great condition while remaining very original
  • Gorgeous styling from a great era
The VW Beetle has always had a very simplistic, yet beautiful interior with there being no doubt about what decade the model was designed. A few knobs and dials protrude from the body colour dashboard which is lined in chrome trim.

Each of the two front seats, finished in black, look in very good condition for the car’s age while the rear bench seat appears almost unused. The door cards complete the sea of darker colours. The headlining gives a sense of openness to the interior despite a slight imperfection towards the rear window.

In great original condition, the car has never had a radio fitted while there are traces of patina on controls such as the handbrake and the steering wheel.

The Exterior

  • Resprayed in gorgeous colour in 2005
  • Patina throughout the vehicle
  • Stylish early Beetle design
Step outside this 1966 VW Beetle and you’ll find a similar story to the interior, the car has been excellently preserved in its original state. That being said, it has benefited from a respray in a gorgeous Bahama Blue colour that helps the car’s design to pop.

Speaking of its design, the 1966 model year makes the most of early Beetle styling cues such as the smaller bumpers and sloping headlights. Coupled with more modern mechanical features, it is a very desirable year of Beetle.

The owner mentions they removed the underseal of the car last year to reveal a very well kept and clean underside while there have been a few repairs done to the floor pan in places like the jacking points and under the battery.

A few bubbles can be seen in parts of the paintwork, especially the nearside front wing. The chrome front bumper also has an imperfection while the offside rear wing has a small dent.

The Mechanics

  • Original 1300 engine
  • Manual four-speed transmission
  • Drives very well
New for the 1966 model year Beetle was the 1300cc engine which replaced the 1200 air-cooled unit. It sits neatly in the engine bay towards the rear of the car and pumps out around 50hp making for the classic Beetle burble many have come to love.

According to the owner, this car shows no signs of problems claiming that it runs great while the master cylinder was replaced in 2018, a dual circuit one takes the place of the single master cylinder originally fitted. Elsewhere, the car is in its original state throughout.

Summary

From top to tail, this 1966 VW Beetle looks to be in great shape and has been kept brilliantly original since it was built. The colour fits the car perfectly accentuating the timeless design that is the Beetle. Mechanically, there doesn’t seem to be anything worrisome to point out.

Describing it as characterful and as having the best of both worlds when it comes to older styling and more recent mechanicals, this car clearly made the current owner smile. Now, it’s ready to put a smile on its next owner’s face.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
