THE APPEAL

The simple yet timeless design of this Porsche 912 gives you the impression the designers drew the initial shape with just one swish of a pen on a sheet of paper.

Some say this model is one of the rarest and most desirable ever built because of the simplistic beauty and attention to design detail on every single part of the car.

Introduced in 1965 the Porsche 912 was completely new looking, with modern suspension and comfort on a par with its 356 predecessor, and it looked pretty much identical to its more expensive 911 sibling. Not only that but it had been designed, just like the 911, to be able to be built using modern mass production methods. It was the perfect successor to the Porsche 356 as a well-balanced and agile driver’s car.

The Porsche 912 was created to be an affordable and practical coupé with sufficient power for point-to-point autobahn use and even today the lightness and agility has the power to entertain on the road.

The economical rear engine offers more range, and the better balance made its handing more predictable and suited to long distance driving. Porsche 912’s outsold Porsche 911’s by a margin of two to one when in production highlighting their reputation for being a reliable and well-built machine.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Photographic History
  • Log book
  • Receipts showing many new parts

The Vendor bought the vehicle in 2000 from Dublin with his 2 brothers who enjoyed co-ownership for over twenty years until the title was transferred to the one owner.

Imported into Ireland in 1999 the car was in excellent condition but looked tired, so the brothers set about improving parts of the car that needed work to bring it up to the standard you see today.

There have been some replacement original panels added prior to the resprays such as the underside plates and a new wing.

Receipts are available for items purchased by the current owner in the last twenty years, but the vehicle came over from America with no history.

The current owner has been meticulous in taking many photographs to document the history in his ownership and these come with the car, a few have been added below.

The car holds a lot of its original patina and hasn’t lost any of the old school charm and charisma as it still has many original features.

THE INTERIOR

  • New steering wheel (original is with the car)
  • Simple, practical, and well-designed dials and switches
  • Factory green tint ‘Sundym’ glass
  • Period radio
  • Read lap seat belts
  • Alarm immobilizer

When it came to the interior, the Porsche design team wanted to emulate the humble spirit of the 912, keeping it simple and underlining the original design approach.

They weren’t looking for luxury in this car, it was all about functionality and practicality in one purposeful package.

Inside the cabin is a timeless mix of solid switchgear, dials and accessories which don’t distract you from the fun of driving such a special machine.

THE EXTERIOR

  • All original brightwork
  • New light lenses
  • Reconditioned original Formula Fuchs alloys
  • Respray in Porsche Slate Grey
  • All new metal plates underneath
  • Most rubber seals and finishes replaced
  • Durrant overtaking mirrors
This charismatic 912 has been resprayed twice by the current owner.

The first back to metal Chalice silver was replaced by the current Porsche Slate Grey colour done in 2017 by Canford Classics in Dorset at a cost of £6000. A new wing and some bodywork improvements were done in that time to ensure the vehicle remained in solid condition for years to come.

Vendor wanted to keep the original patina and has left small details such as the pitting on the wing mirrors let you know you are driving a piece of history and not a new car.

Slight cosmetic work such as a few window rubbers could be replaced to take the vehicle to a show level if needed. The vendor and his brothers had many years of driving pleasure from the car and have always seen it as a reliable and fun means of everyday transport. It could live in a museum, but it really comes alive when being driven.

THE MECHANICALS

  • Smooth reconditioned 5 speed gearbox
  • 1.6 Engine rebuilt by Porsche specialist in Poland
  • New exhaust fitted by Porsche Centre Belfast
  • New shock absorbers
  • Fully overhauled brakes/suspension, dampers, and steering
  • Underbody protection with Waxoyl
  • Fully detailed engine bay with powder coating

The standard gearbox was a four speed but this 912 was fitted with an optional five speed box making it a perfect car for everyday use keeping up with modern traffic.

The 616/16 engine was the most powerful production pushrod engine Porsche had developed at the time, delivering 95 hp from its 1.6 litres. It was significantly lighter than the six cylinder boxer engine used in the 911 with the predictable result that the 912’s front to rear weight distribution was more even, making the car better balanced and really good fun to drive. It’s economical too which as a bonus in today’s market.

SUMMARY

This Porsche 912 is the complete package for desirability, fun, performance, and underneath there is an air of fundamental simplicity and humbleness that only a true classic such as this can achieve.

It’s not about performance or showing off. It’s all about functionality simplicity. Its reliability is due to the engineering genius of its designers and makers.

This is a car you can enjoy every day, both to look at and drive.

It’s the car you will never want to part with.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
