1969 Aston Martin DBS Vantage rolling shell

***Vendor supplied images***

Highlights

  • Rare and desirable factory ‘Vantage’ with a five-speed manual gearbox
  • One of exceedingly few unrestored projects still in existence
  • Stripped down and braced in readiness for repair work to begin, with all mechanical components preserved and catalogued
  • V5C in the vendor’s name

The Appeal

The last Aston Martin developed under David Brown’s stewardship, the DBS was a radical departure from its ‘DB’ predecessors. As before, Touring of Milan were tasked with penning the DB6’s replacement, although the Milanese Carrozzeria went out of business just after unveiling the prototypes so William Towns was brought in to develop the car in-house.
The DBS was offered alongside the DB6 for three years and equipped with the long-lived Marek straight-six as the new V8 was not yet ready for production. These early cars are highly desirable and rare - especially in ‘Vantage’ trim which afforded the DBS a notable power increase from 280 to 325 bhp.
Our example has lain dormant for a number of years and so is now in need of full restoration. Original and unrestored DBS are now very hard to find and manual Vantages are even scarcer, making this an excellent project for a skilled restorer to undertake. The vendor has stripped the bodywork down to the steel superstructure and welded in braces to ensure it keeps its shape. All the surviving mechanical components have been saved and catalogued, ready for restoration and refitment.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered on 18th March 1969
  • UK-supplied in right-hand drive
  • Factory Vantage with a manual gearbox
  • Its original engine and gearbox were transplanted into a DB5 many years ago - the car they are in is still known
  • The vendor found the car in a wood yard around a year ago
  • The car has been dry-stored in the vendor’s barn for the last year
  • V5C in the vendor’s name
  • Originally Aston Martin ‘mink’ but then painted red later
  • Still registered with the DVLA
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing

The Condition

  • The car has some interior components including partial rear seats
  • No windscreen or rear glass
  • The nose section of the bodywork is missing, but the vendor does have one from another car which is available via a separate negotiation
  • The vendor has begun stripping the car down, removing all mechanical components and inventorying them
  • While in need of restoration, the aluminium bodywork appears in reasonable condition
  • The steel superstructure and floors will require extensive repairs - the vendor points out many of the panels/sections are still manufactured
  • The car’s frame has been measured and then braced with steel box section to ensure it remains straight with good tolerances ready for new metal to be let in

The Mechanics

  • The engine and gearbox do not accompany the car
  • All the suspension and steering components are reportedly present
  • The vendor says that the car rolled easily before disassembly began
