1971 Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia camper and mini-caravan (LHD)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Four-berth camper
  • Two-berth pod caravan
  • Official Westfalia conversion imported from California
  • Superb condition inside and out

THE APPEAL

Meet Flo and Bess.

Flo is a four-berth VW Type 2 Westfalia motor caravan. Bess is a micro-caravan/sleeping pod. Together, they’re the perfect combination for classic-themed family fun. Which is exactly what their current owner has used them for since Flo was imported to the UK a decade ago.

His daughter is now a young adult, though, and he acknowledges that that their days of family camping holidays are behind them, so Flo and Bess are ready to put smiles on the faces of a brand new family. They’re impossible not to love…

Flo was imported to the UK in 2010 and externally restored by a respected VW camper specialist, before being fitted out and finished by the vendor – an auto electrician by trade. Bess came a bit later and was painted to match.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Owned by vendor since 2013
  • Only on UK registered keeper
  • Fully restored
  • Rebuilt engine and gearbox
  • User manuals and installation certification for all equipment
  • UK V5C
  • Old MOTs

  • Hand-written notes of repair work carried out

THE INTERIOR

  • Four-berth
  • Pop-up roof
  • Westfalia conversion
  • Sink and cooler
  • Electric water pump
  • Fire extinguisher
  • 12v lighting
  • Rock-and-roll bed with upper roof bed

Inside, the Type 2 is cleverly laid out with a fold-out “rock-and-roll” double bed and a separate smaller double bed in the angled pop-top.

The van was originally a Westfalia conversion, but has changed quite a bit since. It has a dining table, a fold down rear-facing chair and a bench seat, the latter of which also has a seat belt that was used by the vendor’s daughter.

To extend the space on offer, the van also comes with a pop-up awning, ideal for increasing the living area or even providing extra sleeping capacity, as well as lots of camping gear that the vendor will include in the sale. Everything is in the photographs but highlights include water tanks, electric hook-up cables, 12v inverters and even a kettle.

There’s a fully operational sink and a high-quality Waeco fridge, which runs off both a 12v leisure battery and 230v external supply.

Up front, everything is in good order in the LHD cabin, with modern music (there’s an amp put-back, too) and cup holders added to the comfort features.

The caravan, meanwhile, contains a compact double mattress, TV, plug socket and USB power, along with a separate shelving area and drawer.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Restored and painted
  • Excellent chrome and trim
  • Pop-up roof
  • Waxed and undersealed

Imported from California, the Type 2 had minimal rust but it was still subject to a strip-down and bare metal respray in 2010-2013, and the owner has had it fully rustproofed and undersealed since.

It’s still in terrific condition with just a few very tiny flaws – some tiny bubbles at the bottom of one door and one side panel and a tiny scuff on the nearside rear quarter, none of which detract from its fabulous appearance. Both the van and trailer have 230v electric hook-up for campsites.

THE MECHANICS

  • Replacement 1600cc air-cooled engine
  • Gear linkages all replaced
  • Drives well with no known issues

The Type 2 starts on the button with a distinctive air-cooled clatter and settles to a smooth idle almost instantly. It’s a great runner and has been well maintained.

The engine was replaced when the van was restored and is still running faultlessly. The vendor reports that it drives perfectly, with good steering and brakes.

SUMMARY

This is a fantastic opportunity to buy a timeless, depreciation-proof classic that’s the perfect companion for family holidays, or for getting involved in the bustling classic air-cooled VW scene. It’s an icon vehicle in wonderful order, while the micro-caravan adds even further versatility and sleeping space. An absolute gem!

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
