The appeal
The Citroën SM embodies one of the most ambitious big grand tourers of the 1970s. It blends Citroën’s cutting-edge hydropneumatic technology with a V6 engine designed by Maserati. With its striking aerodynamic silhouette, its steering with servo-assisted recall, and an exceptional ride quality, the SM was a genuine technological tour de force. Adopted in particular as a French presidential car, it remains one of the most sought-after models among collectors today.
This 1972 example, presented in an elegant blue-and-beige leather combination, has remained in France for its entire life. It spent around 25 years in the hands of a single owner, who kept it sheltered and used it very sparingly. The seller states that the engine was completely rebuilt in November 2023, the hydraulic system has been overhauled, and the bodywork has been professionally resprayed in its original colour. Fitted with new Michelin tyres and with a valid MOT/inspection until July 2027, this SM, in line with its original configuration, is an excellent opportunity for fans of this remarkable Franco-Italian grand tourer.

✓ VAT is included in the buyer’s deposit. VAT may or may not be included in the final price of the offer or bid, as specified in the listing.
✓ We want to ensure the transaction runs smoothly, just as you do, and that’s why UK-registered cars and motorcycles listed on Car & Classic are subject to an HPI check to confirm that they do not have any insurance-database marker(s) for damage or theft, and that they are not subject to a financial charge—allowing you to bid with confidence.
✓ We also check whether vehicles are recorded as being scrapped as part of a total loss claim at the time the advert is placed on Car & Classic and we provide category labels for scrappage (Cat C/D/S/N) to help you. However, the presence or absence of a label does not guarantee the vehicle’s status, and it remains a good idea to carry out a full vehicle history check before bidding on it.
