Loved and cherished by vendor’s family for a decade
The Appeal
Meet Layla and Dora.
Layla is a four-berth VW Type 2 Westfalia motor caravan. Dora is an Eriba Familia four-berth caravan. Together, they’re the perfect colour-coded combination for classic-themed family fun. And that’s exactly what their current owner has used them for since acquiring the pair a decade ago.
Back then, he had children who were into camping and exploring, and Layla and Dora were perfect for family trips out – the vendor and his wife would sleep in the VW and the offspring would have the excitement of their own independent accommodation in the caravan.
As with all things, though, time has changed the family dynamic and those once adventurous kids are now young adults with lives of their own to lead, so the vendor has bought a larger and more modern motorhome for himself and his wife, and the classic combo are being sold together in the hope that another family will take them under their wing and enjoy them just as much as the existing custodians have.
As for the vehicles themselves, Layla is a right-hand-drive original UK-spec bay window T2 supplied by a respected retro camper specialist in 2014, and Dora was sourced a bit later and painted to match.
This is a fantastic opportunity to buy a timeless, depreciation-proof classic that’s the perfect companion for family holidays, or for getting involved in the bustling classic air-cooled VW scene. It’s an iconic vehicle in very smart order, while the Eriba caravan adds even further versatility and sleeping space. An absolute gem of a rig that turns heads everywhere it goes and is perfect for making memories.

The vendor bought the camper from a well-known Type 2 specialist in Norfolk in 2014, freshly restored. 10 years on it still looks great, but as you may expect from a van restored over a decade ago and used since, there are a couple of areas that will require minor attention – there are a few hairline cracks in the paint, notably on the tailgate and around the front panel, some paint has flaked away from the door handles and there are some rust blisters on the nearside rear arch and on one sill. Nothing major or alarming, though, and the van still looks marvellous in its classic blue and white colour scheme, while the underside appears superb.
The Type 2 is cleverly laid out with a fold-out “rock-and-roll” double bed and a separate smaller double bed in the angled pop-top. It was retrimmed in red leatherette during the rebuild and still looks superb, while rear lap belts have been added for safety. Up front, everything is in good order in the cabin, with modern music and cup holders added to the comfort features.
The caravan, meanwhile, contains a double mattress and a front bunk, along with its own cupboards and cooking area. It’s also in fine condition inside and has clearly been well-loved.
Both the van and trailer caravan have 230v electric hook-up for campsites.
The Mechanics
Replacement 1679cc air-cooled engine fitted in the 1990s
Recent Weber carb conversion
Drives well with no known issues
Always serviced and maintained frequently during current ownership
The Type 2 starts on the button with a distinctive air-cooled clatter and settles to a smooth idle almost instantly. It’s a great runner and has been well maintained by its current owner, who recently had it converted to a twin Weber carb set-up for added performance – performance being a relative term, but it’s livelier than a standard Type 2.
The engine was replaced in 1997 according to a historic invoice in the folder that accompanies the van – it still runs well. The vendor reports that it drives perfectly, with good steering and brakes, and is happy enough towing the lightweight Eriba caravan behind it.

About Max Bids
The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.
Anti-sniping
Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.
Auto-bidding increments
If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.
Matching max bids
When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
