The Appeal

Introduced in 1972 to occupy the middle ground between the entry-level 1300 Junior and the range-topping 2000 GTV, the Alfa Romeo GT Junior 1600 is a favourite among Alfisti. In 1.6-litre form, the venerable Nord twin-cam is perhaps at its most rev-happy, so in the eyes of many, the 1600 Junior is the best “driver’s car” of all the 105-Series Bertone coupés available during the early ‘70s.
We’re delighted to offer this supremely usable right-hand drive South African example. It looks to be in very good condition for its age, benefitting from a life spent in a dry climate.
Debumpered and fitted with aftermarket Wolfrace-style wheels, this Alfa hints at the great marque’s racing pedigree while retaining the very comfortable standard interior. Given its sporting credentials, perhaps the best thing about this Alfa is that it’s not too pristine to use and enjoy as its makers intended.
For those who value behind-the-wheel enjoyment above all else, this is the car for you.

The History and Paperwork

  • One of just 13,120 1600 GT Juniors made - far rarer than its 1300 counterpart
  • Right-hand drive
  • 22,516 kilometres indicated
  • The vendor bought the car five years ago
  • Three former registered keepers
  • Road registered in South Africa
  • Rare to find a right-hand drive example in such well-preserved original condition, as most others were supplied to the UK where the climate is less kind

The Condition

  • The bodywork appears remarkably solid
  • No corrosion is evident in any of the usual places, such as the wheel arches and spare wheel well
  • Slight chip to the driver's door paint, but nothing noteworthy
  • No notable dents or signs of past accident damage
  • Desirable single-headlamp variant, simplifying the lines of the front end
  • Wolfrace-style wheels
  • The glass, badges, lights and trims appear in good shape overall
  • The bumpers have been removed front and rear for a competition-inspired aesthetic
  • The vendor will supply the bumpers should the next owner wish to refit them
  • Besides a few nicks in the upholstery, the seats present well and are not heavily worn
  • The dashboard to is heavily cracked, so would benefit from replacement or repair
  • The controls all present well with minimal wear
  • We’re not informed of any electrical issues
  • The rubber floor mats, door cards and headlining appear in fair order for their age
  • New armrests required

The Mechanics

  • 1.6-litre all-alloy DOHC four-cylinder engine
  • Five-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels
  • This example is fitted with twin Weber carburettors
  • Largely original and well-presented engine bay
  • We understand this Alfa to be in very good driving order
  • The vendor states that the engine returns high oil pressure, no oil or water leaks
  • Last service carried out about 1,500 km ago
  • We’re not informed of any apparent faults
