The Société des Automobiles Alpine SAS, more commonly referred to as simply ‘Alpine’, is a French manufacturer of racing and sports cars established in 1955. The Alpine car marque was created in 1954 by founder Jean Pierre Rédélé.
Rédélé was originally a Dieppe garage proprietor who began to achieve success in motorsport with one of the few French cars that were produced just after the Second World War, the Renault 4CV – a compact, rear-engined, RWD, 4-door car (1947-61). Always closely related to Renault throughout its history, Alpine was eventually acquired by Renault in 1973.
The A110 achieved international fame during the 1970–1972 seasons competing in the newly created International Championship for Manufacturers, winning events throughout Europe and earning a reputation as one of the toughest rally cars of its time.
The competition division of Alpine merged into Renault Sport in 1976 and the production of ‘early’ Alpine-badged models ceased in 1995.
The build of this particular Alpine A110 was completed on 17th October, 1975 at the FASA Valladolid plant in northwest Spain. They were the only versions built outside France that were commercialised under the same names and to the same specifications as the French-built ones.
Little of this car’s history is known prior to its import into the UK in June, 1990. However, the car has been lovingly owned by no less than six owners, with the current owner acquiring the car in August, 2003. From that point on the car’s outlook became somewhat brighter.
During the car’s body restoration and rebuild in 2020, the original interior was retained where possible, including the Moto-Lita Franco steering wheel. The inside presents to a high standard and its condition is commensurate more with the car’s age of 47 years than its mileage of just over 53,000 miles.
The door cards are in very good order and the veneered dashboard is original, as are the instruments and switchgear, all of which are in working order. The compact but tidy front boot houses the fuel tank and battery, with space left over for a couple of weekend getaway bags.
Overall, the interior reflects its ‘lovingly used’ condition and is a delightful place to spend some immersive road time. As pictured, there is a twin set of rugs depicting the Alpine logo and five-point race harnesses to finish off the WRC theme.
As mentioned, the body received a full ‘brightwork-off’ refurb during 2020 and included a total respray in Code-462 ‘Bleu Alpine Met’ paint, enhanced by a lacquered finish.
This classic car rides on a set of smart Mad’In Model 1C wheels shod with Yokohama A539 rubber. Mad’In is a French manufacturer of classic and racing wheels founded in 1975 and is still run by the Gotti family.
The exterior presents in very good condition with the Code-462 gleaming at every turn. The brightwork (of which, being mid-70s there is quite a lot) shines as bright as the paintwork and any parts that didn’t qualify to back on, were replaced at some expense.
Both the rear and front light lenses are clear of the usual age-related fogging caused by too much exposure to sunlight and a pair of covered Cibie IODE spot lights complete the front end.
On the short pootle through a residential area to the photo location, the car sounded in fine fettle. The 1.4-litre Gordini engine was overhauled around 5,000 miles ago.
Earlier this year, the car was in a substantially disassembled state and about to under a full rebuild. Unfortunately, the car’s owner passed away earlier this year and his friend and Alpine enthusiast sought to rebuild the car and complete the project for him, the fine finished result is what you see here.
Underneath, the car is in a clean and tidy condition and all appears to be in good order.

Yesterday, I was privileged to have spent an all-to-brief time with this rarest of gems…a 1975 Alpine A110. It presents in truly remarkable condition inside and out and has a little over 50k miles under its pristine belt.
With a full body refurb last year and an engine rebuild just 5,000 miles ago, the new keeper of this Alpine A110 will have a very tough act to follow in maintaining the excellent condition of this car.
