The Appeal

Who doesn’t love a campervan? The chance to escape to the great outdoors, those striking sunsets, a starry night sky and dawn’s sonorous chorus as you hug a steaming mug of freshly-ground coffee in awe of a multi-coloured sunrise. Bliss!
The very thought of taking a well-earned road trip in a classic, unmolested VW campervan is something to which many aspire. Those that manage to get away, describe the ‘unique sound of the air-cooled VW engine’ and the ‘ruggedness’ of the van, enabling them to travel just about anywhere.
You can do all that…and more, with this iconic mid-70s VW T2 split-windscreen Kombi, just waiting for conversion to a campervan. Read on…

History and Paperwork

  • Imported from Brazil in early 2021
  • Evidently well-looked after out there
  • V5 certificate in former keeper’s name
Manufactured at Volkswagen’s São Bernardo do Campo plant in San Paulo, Brazil during 1975, this left-hand drive Type 2 split-screen Kombi was imported to the UK from Brazil in early 2021.
While the van has no paper trail of its history out in South America, we are advised by the vendor that prior to its export, the van was deployed as a wedding car and provided many a happy day to hundreds of newly-weds (see gallery below, which also includes a pic of it commencing its journey to the UK).
The more astute will notice the colour change from the rather loud, attention-grabbing purple in Brazil to a more serene and period-appropriate blue and while combination it received shortly after it arrived in the UK.
Accompanying the sale will be the V5 certificate in the current keeper’s name and the MoT to July, 2023. As mentioned, there is no paper trail of its history in South America.

The Interior

  • Presents in very good condition throughout
  • Smart cream upholstery, new front seats
  • Mean ex-carnival sound system
The interior of this split screen Kombi presents in very good condition throughout. Refitted out towards the end of its life in Brazil in time for the summer wedding season, all the furniture, door cards and tactile surfaces are very well presented, with contrasting blue carpeting throughout and practical rubber matting over in the cockpit.
All the electrics are said to be in good working order, as are the instruments on the minimalist dashboard. The impressive audio system is paired to a series of serious-looking speakers mounted in the rear bench seat.
No noticeable blemishes to the interior were observed by our photographer. The over-engine luggage area to the rear is tidy and clean.

The Exterior

  • Presented in period blue and white combination
  • Paintwork in very good order with minor blemishes
  • Original 15-inch steelies fitted with healthy white-walls
Now handsomely presented in light blue and white, this T2 ‘splitty’ is in very good condition all-round the exterior, barring a few minor blemishes as pictured in the gallery below.
The smart 15-inch steel wheels are in good condition and are shod with a healthy set of white-walled Direction Cargo tyres.
At the front, the headlight lenses are crystal clear and the plastic indicator/reflector lenses show no hint of UV-bleaching. The same may be said for the original rear light clusters. The brightwork around the car is in reasonable condition and a preliminary glance down each flank shows no evidence of collision damage.

The Mechanics

  • Two original keys
  • Reconditioned engine
  • Long MoT awaits the new keeper
At the photo location, the 1.6 flat-four started first and every time and settled into an appreciative idle. The manual transmission connected smoothly and the clutch engaged with little drama, requiring just a light feathering of the revs to get underway.
The engine compartment is tidy and there appears provision for a ‘leisure’ battery to be fitted to the left of the bay.
Unfortunately, there is no paper trail relating to servicing or maintenance available, but the vendor reports the car to be in healthy mechanical condition with steering, brakes, engine, drivetrain and running gear performing as well as their respective engineers intended.
Like the visible parts of this car, the underside and lower side sills present in very good order with little of the natural oxidation that may reasonably be expected on a car of this age.

Summary

The VW Kombi has become a national institution, having transported thousands of passengers to and fro for decades. Nostalgically known for its often bright paintwork, box-like shape and iconic chromed badge up front, the VW Kombi has become synonymous with surfer-dudes, adventurists and those who can’t get enough of the great outdoors.
This particular Kombi is ripe for a full-on conversion to camper status and offers a blank canvas to those keen to get the project underway and completed in time for spring and summer next year.
The main attraction is the self-contained aspect of a campervan getaway. You can travel, cook, sleep, eat, or simply sit comfortably at the destination of your choice. Even if it rains, you can sit inside in comfort and warmth and just admire the views.

Ammontare dell'offerta Incremento
Da £0 a £9,999 £100.00
Da £10,000 a £49,999 £250.00
Da £50,000 a £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Superamento immediato dell'offerta
