THE APPEAL

Production of the Land Rover Series 3 began in 1971 and ended in 1985 after well over a million vehicles were produced.

This all terrain off road vehicle proved itself to be an excellent workhorse and able to cope with everything that was thrown at it. It is a time proven, solid and reliable all-terrain vehicle used both commercially and privately.

This Series III land Rover is driven regularly and in amazing condition.  The current owner has put a lot of time and energy into creating a vehicle that can claim to be even better than it was when it came off the production line in 1978.

There is a growing interest in these vehicles. With parts being easily available, specialist workshops and clubs to join there’s never been a better time to jump in and get off road.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

Originally owned by a vet, this vehicle spent many years in Ireland in service. Later it was bought by an enthusiast in Westmeath before the current owner purchased it. In the time between the vets ownership and the current one the vehicle was parked up for a long time and was in need of some serious restoration.

Somewhere along the line the history of the vehicle was mislaid. As this vehicle has been totally restored with many new parts the vendor feels that the huge file of images from the recent restoration is what really counts as the legacy of this Land Rover.

In the four years of ownership the current vendor has had fitted, a new galvanized chassis, new doors, new bulkhead, new electrics, lights, covers, floors, brightwork and a total engine rebuild.

It is arguably like a new vehicle waiting for a new history chapter to be written. It could be said that the only thing not new or refurbished in this vehicle is the glass.

THE INTERIOR

  • Harwood flooring to the rear section
  • New upholstery on all seats front and back
  • Metal cabin roof
  • New interior floor panels
  • Simple, sturdy and stylish controls
  • Original steering wheel
The plain metal central utility dashboard of the Series 2 and 2a was replaced with modern vinyl, and  re-located the instruments directly in front of the driver. This gives this cabin a more upmarket feel than previous models. It’s not much in the way of luxury but the matching material to the seating does give a softer feel to the interior.

The sturdy dials and switches are working well.

The seating has been professionally resprung and recovered and are supportive.

The rear seating in the pickup area is fixed into place and the high-quality wooden planks on the floor are both practical and tactile.  Every detail of the interior has been recommissioned to a very high standard.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Galvanized brightwork and hinges
  • Undersealed and weather protected
  • Quality respray in Heritage Inca Yellow
  • Galvanized bumpers
  • Contrasting white roof
  • Refurbished wheels
  • New glass light covers
  • Tow bar
The headlights and indicators have been replaced along with new glass light covers to the rear. The spare wheel is securely located on the bonnet and has been refurbished to a high standard along with the other four wheels. There are five brand new tyres.

The paintwork has been done to a high standard and has only some light superficial marks and scratches that comes from regular use. These are very slight cosmetic details ready to be tackled by the next lucky owner.

THE MECHANICALS

  • New brakes
  • New springs
  • Fully synchromesh four speed gearbox
  • 4x4 part-time (rear permanent, front engaged manually in off-road conditions)
The four-cylinder 2.3 ltr diesel engine was totally stripped and rebuilt with any necessary improvements being made. The vehicle starts and drives beautifully, and the vendor assures us everything is working well.

All the gearing and mechanicals were restored and undersealed for protection.

SUMMARY

It's not often we see a restoration carried out with such an attention to detail.

The current vendor project managed the strip down, refurbishment and rebuild from beginning to end ensuring the best specialist people and parts were commissioned to do the work and this is reflected in the finished product.

The work has been well documented in photographs and just a few are posted below.

It was a long and expensive journey from being a neglected and forgotten vehicle to this fine example just waiting for a new owner to enjoy.

But I think you’ll agree, it was well worth it.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
