The Appeal

If like Buford T. Justice you’re “in pursuit of a black Trans Am”, then you’ve come to the right place. Yes, if smuggling Coors east of the Mississippi River is on your to-do list in 2024, then this black-on-black 1979 Pontiac Trans Am would certainly be up to the job.
This car is a remarkably solid and near-totally complete Californian import that comes with an age-appropriate Pontiac 400 engine and genuine Trans Am four-speed manual transmission.
For those seeking a restoration project that doesn’t include hours of fabrication, this Trans Am looks like and excellent choice as the vendor believes it only needs repainting, dashboard refurbishment and a new headlining before the car can be reassembled and returned to the road.
The aforementioned 1979 Pontiac 400 engine was in good running order and was dismantled by its previous owner to install performance parts. The vendor persuaded them to part with it, hence why the work was never completed, leaving it up to the next owner whether to go on the upgrade route or, re-assemble the engine as-is. The gearbox is reportedly ready to go.
While not yet UK road registered, all import taxes have been paid and the car has been in present ownership for over a decade now. The vendor is willing to assist in obtaining a V5C if required, and all its paperwork is supplied including a full PHS file.

The History and Paperwork

  • The vendor informs us that this car is the same specification as the start car in 'Smokey and the Bandit 2'
  • Previously registered in California USA
  • Imported to the UK (all taxes paid)
  • Not yet road registered - no V5C or UK number plate
  • PHS paperwork with a copy of the factory specifications/build sheet
  • The vendor is willing to help the new owner attain a V5C
  • Originally fitted with an Oldsmobile 403 and auto gearbox from new - (mandatory California spec)
  • The vendor sourced the year correct Pontiac 400 engine and genuine Trans Am four-speed manual transmission
  • The vendor can possibly assist with safe delivery at extra but very reasonable cost

The Condition

  • Straight, solid and original body shell
  • The car is reportedly complete except for bell housing and gear lever - which the vendor informs us are both easy and cheap items to source
  • Black-on-black from new
  • Requires repainting
  • We’re assured that there is no perforating corrosion to address/welding required to the shell
  • Light surface rust present as can be seen in the pictures caused by many years of sun baking the paint. But zero corrosion or remedy required beyond rub down and re-paint
  • All glass present, correct and in perfect condition, including the correct Fisher T-Tops.
  • All looks smart underneath for an unrestored car of this age
  • The dashboard would benefit from refurbishment
  • New headlining and carpeting required
  • The seats present well, with some age-commensurate wear

The Mechanics

  • Pontiac 400 cu in (6.5-litre) V8 - previously running but now disassembled to fit performance parts
  • Four-speed manual transmission sourced from a reputable supplier and reportedly ready to use
  • Correct Trans Am clutch pedal and ‘Z bar’ supplied (to carry out auto - manual conversion)
  • Equipped with the WS6 handling package

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
