The Appeal
The TR8 was a final ‘hurrah’ for Triumph’s long-running TR sports car series. Fitted with the lusty and reliable all-aluminium Rover V8, the model was developed primarily for the USA market, and the majority of examples were convertibles. To cope with the extra power, the TR8 was equipped with uprated brakes, and the battery was moved to the boot. The model also received alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel and some upgraded trim.
This left-hand drive 1980 model has spent most of its life in a dry state of the USA, which has helped to preserve it well. Of the 1,200 TR8s reckoned to survive, this became one of an estimated less than 70 in the UK when it was imported in 2025. Its yellow paint remains glossy, and its black mohair convertible hood and interior with grey cloth seats present extremely well for its age. Only a little untidy wiring can be seen upon closer inspection.
The car is highly original, wearing the slightly larger US-spec bumpers and side markers it left the factory with, as well as all its decal badging. The pop-up headlights are in working order.
Beneath the bonnet, the engine bay is very clean. The original Stromberg carburettors have been replaced by Holly carburettors with tubular inlet manifolds and an MSD ignition system, to enhance the car’s performance. Bullet silencers are also fitted. The underside of the car also presents extremely well.
Thoughtfully and sensitively enhanced, this TR8 is ready to drive and enjoy right away and, as the seller says, “the mohair roof and period boot rack finish it off perfectly”. The seller states that viewing is welcome, either in person or via video call. They also advise that they can assist with arranging transport if required.
