The Appeal
It wasn’t a new idea - that accolade likely belongs to the Ferrari 365 ‘Tre Posti’ - but it was certainly a clever one.So clever that Gordon Murray recycled it for McLaren’s F1.Of course, we’re talking about the Talbot-Matra Murena, a sports car that could seat three.Side by side.
The quirky Talbot-Matra was a newer, nimbler version of the earlier Bagheera, the Matra that had introduced the very French three-abreast sports car idea to modern buyers.Mid-engined, with excellent weight distribution, it was light and entertaining in a way few contemporaries could manage.Of the 10,000 built more than half were equipped with the Simca 1,592cc engine like this one.
Its very well kept condition is a timely reminder of just how stylish and unusual these cars were.A recent engine rebuild and regular APK tests attest to its readiness for a new buyer.For that lucky person, this is one of the more interesting modern classics we’ve seen in recent months.
