1983 Ford Sierra XR4i

  • Early and very rare 2.8litre V6 XR4i
  • Factory standard with desirable light modifications
  • Very low mileage of under 45,000 miles
  • Eligible for Historic Vehicle tax, MOT and ULEZ exempt status
  • Very smart and well kept 80s hot hatch

The Appeal

Ford was no stranger to ‘fastifying’ its family cars, so when it came to creating the XR4i it pulled out the stops. There was a new three door shell, a drizzle of go-faster accoutrements - most notably that twin-deck spoiler - and the grunty 2.8litre Cologne V6 borrowed from the Capri.
More potent sporting Sierras would follow, but it all started here. Today the XR4i is a rare and very characterful 80s hot hatch that works somewhere between sports car and relaxing GT. Good, unmodified examples are rare, but here we have one.
Finished in classic silver metallic, it is a very low mileage car whose sparing use delivers a neatly preserved vehicle across the exterior and interior. As a 1983 it qualified for Historic Vehicle status from April this year, so is now usefully MOT, tax and ULEZ exempt. The last MOT expired in May with no advisories.
The XR4i is a rare sight on the market, particularly with such low mileage. With interest in these cars growing, this early example is one not to miss.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 31st August 1983
  • Current keeper since July 2019
  • Now eligible for Historic Vehicle status
  • This makes it MOT, tax and ULEZ exempt
  • Last MOT expired 4th May 2024 with no advisories on test
  • 44,377 miles showing on test and now on 44,421
  • MOT history supports low mileage with 41,570 miles showing in 2006
  • Chassis number WFOBXXGBBB confirms this is a genuine XR4i

The Condition

  • Smart and apparently original silver metallic paintwork in good order

  • Standard car with modified Cosworth-style bonnet vents and vented grille
  • Underside presents well with no structural advisories on last MOT
  • Boot floor in good condition with no obvious deterioration
  • Due to the originality buyers should anticipate some age-related marks to exterior
  • Retains its factory-correct ‘pepperpot’ alloys with matching spare, all well kept
  • Very original and standard blue/grey cloth interior in good condition
  • Some light wear to cloth seats including fading and bolster marks
  • Classic Sierra dashboard angled towards dashboard with blue/grey two-tone trim
  • Switchgear carefully positioned in driver’s sight line, like a Saab
  • Door cards original and in good condition
  • Electric windows and electric remote mirrors
  • Sunroof with manual operation
  • Headlining in good condition with no obvious marks or sagging
  • Aftermatket Pioneer stereo fitted but otherwise unmodified interior
  • Original two-spoke wheel with red-rimmed horn buttons
  • Innovative ‘Frankenstein’ bodyshell using components from 5dr and 3dr Sierras
  • Designed by Peter Horbury of Volvo and Lotus fame (RIP)

The Mechanics

  • Originally factory supplied with 2.8litre 148bhp fuel injected Cologne V6
  • Sierras used tried and tested Mk5 Cortina RWD running gear
  • 5spd manual gearbox
  • Uprated exhaust system
  • No known running or driving issues to report
  • No mechanical or running gear advisories on last MOT
  • Due to sparing recent use buyers should anticipate some recommissioning

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
