The Appeal

Intended by Porsche to replace the 911 as their flagship model, the front-engined, water-cooled 928 was certainly a deviation from the traditional Porsche recipe. Nevertheless, the result was a sports car that aimed to incorporate luxurious features that Porsche was unable to shoehorn into the compact 911.

When you consider that this 928 is now nearing its 40th Birthday, it has really survived rather well. As a great basis for a rolling restoration, this Porsche can still be enjoyed in its current roadworthy condition and has great potential to become one of the smartest S2 examples on the road.

If you’re a fan of 155 mph performance and, even more importantly, pop-up headlamps, then this modern classic may well be for you!

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in the UK in 1984
  • Left for France in 2001 but was never registered
  • Sent back to the UK in 2018 and returned to  France in may 2023
  • Last MOT expired in May 2023, a French Contrôle Technique will be carried out before the sale
  • Part main dealer service history
  • Currently assigned the registration 'B198 LPE'

The Condition

  • Ziegelrotmetallic
  • Appears highly original
  • Fair overall condition
  • Largely original and complete
  • Electrically adjustable front seats
  • Good basis for sympathetic restoration
  • The front spoiler needs a little attention (see in the gallery)
  • Very little rust on the chassis, not to be confused with the colour of the bodywork
On the outside, this Porsche appears to be very original, retaining what would seem to be its original coat of Zeigelrotmetallic paint. As the vendor points out, there are numerous blemishes all over the car and a few dents. As the paintwork is faded and suffering from lacquer peel in places, we wouldn’t be too concerned about the numerous blemishes since the car requires a respray to look its best.
The exterior trim is also in good condition and appears complete. The mirrors and badges have survived well, while showing some signs of age. The vendor describes the condition of the wheels as ‘fair’, which we wholeheartedly agree with. The Porsche alloys present quite well and are shod with tyres that have a good level of tread remaining.

The quirkiness of the 928 is most apparent in the interior and this example makes good use of leather and striped velour. The electric seats look exceedingly comfortable, if a little tired. The vendor informs us that the front passenger’s seat base has been reupholstered and indeed it presents in better condition than the driver’s. As they are, the seats remain quite serviceable, although a thorough clean and a little retrimming could work wonders.
The only element of the interior that hasn’t fared so well is the dashboard, which has multiple cracks and would require repair or replacement. The vendor informs us that the air conditioning requires re-gassing and the central locking currently doesn’t function correctly. The Porsche's speedometer works as it should, although the vendor advises that the odometer has recently stopped.

The interior boot light is also not working and the spare wheel is present. The vendor informs us that the Porsche toolkit is around half present. While they are slightly discoloured and worn from age and use, the carpets have survived well and are definitely usable. The vendor also informs us that the headlining is in reasonable condition.
Overall, the interior of this 928 has stood the test of time well and is a good basis for rolling restoration as what’s there is quite usable in its current state.

The Mechanics

  • 32 valve engine using 2 distributors
  • New timing belt, water pump and ECU
  • New fuel pump, filter and hoses
  • New vacuum hoses
  • Automatic gearbox
  • Brake repair kit included (ATE super blue racing brake fluid, Goodridge aviation type hose kit, ATE front caliper gasket set)
  • Complete new ignition (coils, spark plugs, distributor caps, rotor arms, ignitions cables)
  • Fuse and relay box cleaned and checked
In 1984, Porsche unveiled a new 32 valve version of their V8, which was given two distributors, (one for each bank of cylinders). As part of this 928’s recommissioning process, the engine received a new timing belt, water pump, ECU. and injectors too.

The Porsche also drives well, changing gear as it should and stopping well in a straight line. The vendor reports that there is occasionally some black smoke which they believe is due to an out of adjustment throttle set up - something they are attempting to remedy before the car goes to its next owner. The vendor is including the original injectors and some new relays as part of the sale. A brake repair kit is also included with: ATE super blue racing brake fluid, Goodridge aviation type hose kit, ATE front caliper gasket set.
