THE BACKGROUND

The MK2 Ford Fiesta XR2 appeared in 1985 to build on the success and kudos of the Mk1 car. The main changes to the later car are a larger and more obvious body kit, a more powerful 1.6L CVH engine previously seen in the XR3 and a five-speed gear box. All useful and desirable enhancements.

THE HISTORY

This car is an official Spanish built UK car currently registered and residing in Southern Ireland. The key appeal of this car is its complete originality, condition, and mileage. The owners are Ford enthusiasts and understand the importance of originality in the fast Ford community.

In fact, the owner reports that the XR2 is in stunning condition inside and outside, drives beautifully and has the correct exhaust which gives it that very distinctive XR2 crackle that we all remember.

This originality and condition is reinforced by the number of concours and show prizes that the car has enjoyed over its life.

THE PAPERWORK

As the picture package shows there is a great level of reassurance-giving paperwork and provenance with this car. This includes a large number of previous MOT’s, including its current Eire test certificate, a number of key invoices and, of course, those impressive concours and show prizes. Something for the new owner to be very proud of. There is also the original service booklet, tracking service activity up to 62k miles.

THE INTERIOR

It is hard to describe this car without repeatedly using the word “originality!” The red, blue and grey pinstriped fabric on the seats and door cards appears unripped and unmarked.

The plastics and vinyl of the dash and door cards are, again, apparently unmarked and very much period correct or original. The carpets have been protected by carpet mats and, hence, present very well indeed. Very unusually for this period, the sectioned parcel shelf is devoid of any aftermarket speakers or ugly holes where they once were.

THE EXTERIOR

The exterior of this car walks that fine line of presenting in excellent condition but retaining a degree of originality which is very hard to find nowadays. The iconic 13 inch “pepper pot” alloy wheels look amazing and the period correct Pirelli P6000 tyres (front) and Hiflys (rear), are in the correct 185/60 size.

The panels all appear straight and free from chips, scratches or dents. The panel gaps are as tight and consistent as when the car left the Spanish Almussafes factory in 1985. There is a significant amount of black plastic on the exterior of the MK2 XR2 and this all presents very well without scratches or car park related damage.

THE MECHANICS

Appropriately for a multiple prize winner the mechanical features of this car not only look great but have been very well maintained and, hence, work as you would expect. Add to this the low mileage for a car of this age and this is a rare mechanical specimen of an XR2.

The all-important timing belt, a quality Gates item, and water-pump were replaced at 73,305 miles so the new owner can enjoy many more miles of hot-hatch fun without concern.

THE APPEAL

The appeal of this XR2 is plain for all to see. It’s very low mileage, having averaged just a shade over 2,000 miles per year of its life! The originality is remarkable. Those in the know will understand how hard it is to find an unmolested XR2.

Look no further, this is possibly the most original one we have seen for many years. Lastly, of course, this car is from an era when performance cars were still light, giving this car a power to weight ratio in the region of 100bhp per tonne. That spells fun and that original ethos of the XR2 remains in this amazing little fast Ford.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
€0 to €9,999 €100.00
€10,000 to €49,999 €250.00
€50,000 to €99,999 €500.00
€100,000 + €1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
