The Appeal

Replacing the iconic Type 2 ‘Bay Window’ would never be easy, and it’s fair to say the apple didn’t fall far from the tree when the Volkswagen ‘T3’ was launched in 1979. It shared its predecessor's cab-over design and rear-engined layout, although its styling became more angular in line with contemporary fashions.
Sold in the UK under the name ‘T25’, the new Volkswagen proved as popular as its forebears, with many undergoing camper conversions. That’s what makes this 1986 example noteworthy, as it’s a high specification Caravelle Minibus which retains its original seating arrangement. It’s also equipped with the sought-after 1.9-litre “Wasserboxer” petrol engine, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox which makes this one of the most usable of the classic T25s.
It was restored around two years ago and professionally repainted in its original Dove Grey Metallic. With some service history available as a collection of old invoices, this minibus appears to have been well-maintained and is offered for sale in remarkably good condition. The current MOT is valid until August 2024, so it’s ready to go for the next owner.

The History and Paperwork

  • UK-supplied ‘T25’ in right-hand drive and first registered in 1986
  • Restored around two years ago to a high standard
  • Some service history available in old invoices for parts and servicing
  • Not matching numbers
  • Current MOT valid until August 2024

The Condition

  • Highly original inside and out
  • Professionally repainted in original Dove Grey Metallic LH5U and adorned with period-correct vinyls
  • The vendor notes that it is not a “Concours” respray, but it is nevertheless very presentable
  • The bodywork appears commendably straight and solid, with good panel gaps
  • Underneath, the chassis, sills and floor pans appear sound and present well
  • The chrome and black plastic trims look to be in smart order
  • Unusually, for a vehicle so often converted to a campervan, the original minibus interior is retained
  • We’re advised that the modern DIN stereo is not connected at present
  • The upholstery looks immensely smart, with minimal wear besides a few blemishes
  • The dashboard, instruments and controls present beautifully and are free from notable signs of use
  • Slight discolouration to the carpet in places, but nothing noteworthy
  • The headlining appears clean for its age and well-supported throughout

The Mechanics

  • Water-cooled 1.9-litre “Wasserboxer” petrol engine
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • We’re informed that the engine has been replaced at some point
  • The vendor reports that the van drives well, with no apparent faults

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
