THE HIGHLIGHT

The Biturbo range represents one of the most unusual but equally fascinating episodes in the history of Maserati.

Built between 1981 and 1994, the BiTurbo dynasty had many different names and variants - initially marketed simply as the BiTurbo, it became in turn the 222, the 2.24v, the Racing, the 420, the 425, the 430, the 422, the 4.24v, the 4.18v, the 228... not forgetting all the annual variations, as well as the Spyder versions, the slightly shorter Karif coupé, the BiTurbo Quattroporte and finally the Ghibli - all essentially the same car with the same elegant appearance and the same short, wide body.

The Biturbo Spyder was designed by Giusseppe Mittino and built for Maserati by Zagato in Milan, on the same short chassis used by the Karif coupé. All export models were powered by a 2.5-litre V6 engine with carburettor and 18-valve turbocharger, which was technologically incredible for a car of the 1980s, combining a turbo, carburettor and three valves per cylinder. It was more powerful than the 2.0-litre engine sold in Italy for tax reasons.

This example is a model from the French market in good condition, unrestored but well preserved and with less than 73,000 km on the clock.

Maserati has never been subtle with its colour names, and 'Exotic Red' makes that clear, and the livery looks superb on the wide-sided, flat BiTurbo, helped by the delightful 1980s 'Rifle Grey' solid alloy wheels.

The bright red bodywork is set off by a stylish black mohair soft top, which presents very well and features a well-preserved clear rear window and stylish brown headliner, while the underside appears to be in excellent condition, with no evidence of structural deformation.

Inside, the beige leather is elegant in a way that only Italians can achieve, with only slight deterioration and embedded dirt on the driver's seat.

Meanwhile, the dashboard and controls (including the bulky Maserati clock) are in excellent condition. In-car entertainment is provided by a vintage Kenwood cassette radio, and the boot is elegant and good-looking with original carpeting and tools.

THE ENGINE

  • 2.5-litre 18v V6
  • 193bhp
  • Five-speed manual transmission
  • We are told that the vehicle drives very well

The BiTurbo export models were more powerful than the entry-level Italian models, with the technologically fascinating 2.5-litre V6 producing a rather brisk 193bhp for its time, which in this example is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.

The car was recently serviced at 72,340km, less than 1,000km ago, and has been privately stored. According to the vendor, it is in good working order.
