1987 Porsche 911 (930) Turbo Cabriolet

Highlights

  • Considered by many to be the archetypal 911
  • A true symbol of the 80s excesses
  • Maintained by Specialists throughout its life and professionally refreshed in 2004

The Background

When you think of the 1980s you think big hair, shoulder pads, brick telephones, Yuppies with red braces and of course the Porsche 911 Turbo. It was THE car that showed the world that you’d made it on the stock markets. An indication of wealth and success perhaps, but the car was much more than that, it was a benchmark for Porsche and meant that all other manufacturers of the time had to play catch-up.

With its large turbo shoving extra air into the legendary 3.3 flat-six generating almost 300bhp and the unmistakable whale tail trying, often in vain, to keep all that power in check and the car on the road. It may have been introduced in 1978 but the 911 Turbo, or should I say 930, will remain the poster car of an entire generation.

The History

Bought in 2020 our owner has inherited a fabulous Porsche that has had a considerable amount of time, effort and money spent on it before changing hands. Throughout its life, it has been serviced regularly by only the best Specialists. It has also enjoyed some tasteful upgrades such as 928S brakes and an upgraded exhaust system.

The current guardian has simply enjoyed the car, safe in the knowledge that it has been exceptionally cared for. In his keep, he has treated it to a 3 stage paint correction and ceramic coating.

The Paperwork

A file filled with a copious amount of paper invoices show the continual and uncompromised service history. As well as necessary work there’s also evidence of the upgrades, such as brakes and exhaust along with large overhauls on gearbox, engine and turbo.

The V5 is present. There are some interesting Porsche validation documents too, including a valuation back in 2017.

The Exterior

In 2004 the bonnet, front wings and doors underwent a bare metal respray and were finished in the original gorgeous Guard Red that has also been ceramic coated. There is a lovely deep gloss to the coachwork with only a couple of minor imperfections, a stone chip on the bonnet and a slight scratch on the passenger rear arch.

The Fuchs wheels are year correct Porsche stamped originals but there is a set of larger aftermarket alloys that came with the car complete with tyres that will be available.

The Interior

The interior has also been fully re-trimmed at the same time the bodywork was refreshed in 2004 and shows only minimal wear since. The roof, which has an accompanying tonneau cover, folds electrically and without hesitation and all the instruments and controls work efficiently. A modern DAB Pioneer sound system has been installed with an amplifier and subwoofer concealed under the front seats.

The owner also indicated that the vehicle is fitted with a tracker and immobiliser to give the new owner piece of mind.

The Mechanics

The car sounds and smells just as a 911 should. There has been quite an extensive overhaul programme throughout the car’s life which has seen the engine, gearbox and suspension all receive attention to keep it all in good working order. The addition of a set or Porsche 928S brakes certainly help to inspire confidence in being able to halt the 300 horses the car can generate.

The Appeal

The Porsche 911 Turbo (930) is such an unmistakably iconic shape. Emblazoned all over the bedroom walls of a generation this car was and still is a dream car to many people. This one has been enviously coveted and maintained to an extremely high standard, and goodness does it show? The looks, the sound and the feel are just so analogue compared with somewhat more mundane digitised offerings of today.

It would be fair to suggest that they don’t make cars like this anymore, and you’d be right because they don’t or should that be daren’t. That’s because the Porsche Turbo was far more visceral than its counterparts, and although it may have been associated with Estate Agents and Stockbrokers of the 80s, the 911 Turbo remains something of a beast.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
