The Interior
- Beige leather interior
- Optional rear seats
The interior of this 300 SL is everything you could hope for in an ‘80s roadster. Its beige leather is nicely used, without looking scruffy; the instrumentation, switches and controls are all clear and legible; even the interior of the hard top roof remains clean and tidy.
This car benefits from 2+2 seating, allowing the occasional transport of passengers in the back. The leather on the driver’s seat is clearly used but remains in remarkably good condition for its age and mileage, without tears or stains. And the rest of the seating looks to be very clean.
Fortunately, this car comes complete with a wind deflector, which sits behind the headrests, and the original Mercedes-Benz first aid kit is still in the boot, together with the original Blaupunkt radio.
The Exterior
- Signal Red paintwork
- Refurbished wheels
- Extensive restoration work completed
Finished in the correct, Factory ‘Signal Red’, this Mercedes presents extremely well, belaying it’s 33 year age. Having benefited from the extensive restoration works, as documented in the accompanying photographic history file, it offers a new owner a ready to enjoy classic.
There was a large amount of work undertaken in 2012, which is detailed in the photo album, showing that this car has had received a lot of attention to its bodywork. It appears that any welding works necessary, including the all important front bulkhead repairs, were undertaken, before receiving a full repaint in the original Signal Red.
Certainly, this 300 SL now appears to be in fine fettle, with nice lines and panel gaps. The refurbished wheels look very smart and the chrome and plastic trim appears to be in good condition, with its characteristic shark-nosed grille giving it that classic Mercedes stance.
The vendor states that the mohair soft top is a recent replacement and it looks very clean and tidy, with crystal clear windows and without any rips or stains. The original hard top is also still with the car, which is in excellent condition and is complete with the storage stand.
The Mechanics
- Service & repair records available
- Previous restoration work undertaken
- 3-litre straight-six, produces 188bhp
The vendor informs us that the original service book has stamps from first service, showing the car’s extensive service history from when it was new in 1989, right up until July 2021. The car reportedly covered half its mileage in the early years, so it has led a relatively quiet life since.
The M103 E30 engine fitted to this 300 SL has a reputation for coping very well with extremely high mileages, so it should be good for a while yet. This unit was shared with the W124 saloon, meaning that spare parts and expertise are still in plentiful supply.
It’s easy to see why the 300 SL remains a favourite among collectors, with its smooth straight-six engine kicking out a very respectable 188bhp, these cars can certainly shift when you want them to.
Summary
A beautiful example of the ever-popular 300 SL, produced in its last year of manufacture, this car is sure to be appreciated by connoisseurs of the model. There can’t be many cars that would make a better daily driver than a Mercedes R107.
With its excellent service record and extensive restoration work carried out, this car is ready to be thoroughly enjoyed by its next owner.
