THE APPEAL
When the Porsche ‘964’ generation of 911 appeared in 1989, it was the most significant advance in the air-cooled Porsche’s history since the first 911 appeared in 1963.
For although it retained the same basic bodyshell and flat-six engine design of the original, Porsche claimed that that car was 80% new, with a brand-new cabin layout, different panels and bumpers, new transmissions, larger wheels and tyres and (at launch) a new four-wheel-drive layout in the form of the Carrera 4.
But the biggest change was in the suspension. Gone were the torsion bars that had underslung every air-cooled Porsche since 1963, replaced by MacPherson struts upfront wit coil springs and shock absorbers – a move that also required a redesign of the inner wing structure and front bulkhead.
Another feature of the new model was its electric rear spoiler, which raised at speeds above 50 mph and lowered down flush with the rear engine lid at lower speeds, doing away with the need for the wild ‘tea tray’ rear spoilers seen on 1980s 911s.
This example is a 1991 964 Carrera 2S Targa, an original right-hand-drive UK car in good overall condition, with a genuine low mileage. It’s a great-looking car in very good overall order

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
Original example
81,151 miles
UK V5C
Recently recommissioned after nine years laid-up
Some history
THE INTERIOR
Tan leather upholstery
Minor wear
Aftermarket CD stereo
Three-spoke sports steering wheel
Open the door and you’ll find a tan leather interior that’s a bold but inviting contrast to the black bodywork. It’s generally very well-presented, but the leather trim has a few scuffs and marks commensurate with the car’s age and mileage, and nothing off-putting.
The dashboard, carpets, switches and gauges are in good order and everything appears to work as it should. An aftermarket stere is fitted along with a three-spoke sports steering wheel, though the original is included in the front boot along with the original 911 wheel.
THE EXTERIOR
Very smart and solid
Removeable Targa roof
Sports alloy wheels
Straight and tidy panels
Most of the black paint is that applied by the factory, which is proof that the 911 has been well looked after and cherished throughout its life – a fact backed up by an average mileage of less than 3,000 a year.
Overall, it looks absolutely marvellous, with a deep, glossy shine and no obvious faults or issues other than a few minor marks, scuffs and chips.
The five-spoke alloys are smart and well-finished with only a few tiny marks and the removeable Targa top comes off and latches back on easily.
THE MECHANICS
3.6-litre air-cooled straight-six
Rear-wheel drive
Four-speed auto with semi-auto function
Runs and drives well
The unmistakable sound of a flat-six 911 is something to relish – it sounds absolutely wonderful, with a warbly idle and a snarling eagerness when you blip the throttle.
It was a lively engine when new, with 247bhp – enough to propel it from 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 163mph. Decent figures even by today’s standards.
It starts on the button, holds good oil pressure and is said to run very well with no known issues, having recently been recommissioned.
SUMMARY
This is a smart and handsome example of what was arguably the best of the air-cooled 911s, certainly from a driver’s perspective. It’s a genuine car in good overall condition, with room for minor improvement should you wish, but more than usable and enjoyable as it stands.

About Max Bids
The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.
Anti-sniping
Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.
Auto-bidding increments
If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.
Matching max bids
When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
Pre-authorisation
We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.
What are pre-bids?
A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.
