The Appeal

Irv Gordon drove his Volvo P1800 3.2 million miles - that’s six return trips to the moon.
They are the quintessential high-mileage hero, so, by Volvo standards, this 740 is barely run in.
It has averaged just 1,000 miles a year since it rolled off the forecourt in 1989, as the first keeper of over thirty years used it solely for local journeys. The car has been garaged from new and judiciously maintained, making it one of the best original 740s you’re ever likely to encounter.
The Volvo caught the eye of ‘Hairy Biker’ Si King back in 2021, who made the rare switch from two wheels to four and became its second registered keeper. Since then, the 740 has undergone recommissioning work and has benefitted from more regular use. Complete with an MOT valid until October 2024, and reportedly serviced within the last 500 miles, this Volvo is ready to be enjoyed by a new custodian.
Finding a 740 estate in such superb original condition, let alone with a mere 35,151 miles on the clock is practically unheard of. This 1989 example offers an unrivalled opportunity for collectors, so don’t miss out

The History and Paperwork

  • Current MOT valid until 16th October 2024
  • Every MOT on DVLA record (since 2005) passed first time
  • The vendor acquired the car in 2021 from a classic car specialist, who in turn sourced it from the first registered keeper
  • The original owner kept the Volvo garaged at their home in the South of England, using it only to complete the occasional local journey
  • 35,151 miles indicated
  • At the last MOT test prior to present ownership,(6th October 2020), 26,597 miles were recorded
  • Two registered keepers
  • Original registration ‘F96 YRN’ matches the etched glass
  • V5C present
  • UK-supplied in right-hand drive
  • Original Owner’s Manual, stereo operating instructions and other dealer materials accompany the car

The Condition

  • Original, unrestored and immaculate throughout for its age
  • Exceedingly straight bodywork with crisp panel alignment and well-fitting doors all-round
  • The superb red paintwork exhibits a deep, lustrous shine and very few finish blemishes
  • The plastic bumpers have accrued some patina over time with the odd small scuff on the corners, but no notable damage
  • Some light kerb damage to the wheel trims that are otherwise in fine condition
  • Equipped with a towbar and twin trailer electrics
  • Underneath, all looks highly original and in great shape with no obvious corrosion or damage
  • Commensurate with the remarkably low mileage, the interior is barely worn
  • The upholstery presents impeccably, with no signs of notable wear even on the driver’s seat
  • The controls and instrumentation are similarly smart and we’re not informed of any faults
  • Original Volvo branded cassette stereo player still in place
  • Manual wind windows
  • The vendor advises that one of the rear headrests is missing, although these are readily available
  • We noticed a slight nick in the nearside rear door card which is hardly noticeable as no material is missing
  • The carpets, headlining and rubber overmats are all in fantastic condition
  • The cavernous boot looks to be in lovely condition with no signs of heavy use

The Mechanics

  • 2,316 four-cylinder petrol engine
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • Pristine engine compartment
  • We’re informed that it was most recently serviced within the last 500 miles
  • Reportedly drives very well indeed with no apparent issues or untoward noises to report

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
