The Appeal
With the XJ40, Jaguar seemed to forget its heritage as a high-performance saloon car maker. But if you had sufficiently deep pockets, there was a solution. For a 50% premium over your XJ40 purchase price - equivalent to nearly £50,000 today - you could get Chasseur to build you a Stealth.
Key to the Stealth’s makeover was the input of Turbo Technics, which added two Garrett T25 turbos to hike power by 50% to a stated 310bhp, although in reality it was closer to 340bhp. The suspension and steering were tweaked, and it was fitted with a bespoke straight-through exhaust. The Chasseur could out-accelerate all of its peers, including Bentley Turbo R, Mercedes 560 SEL and BMW 750.
Numbers vary, but between 30 and 43 were built. This is car number 21. Looking smart in burgundy red with its array of Chasseur body additions, including a pair of bonnet edge vents, it has covered just 47,000 miles in the hands of a few keepers. The condition is impressive across the exterior and the luxury Sovereign-specification beige leather.
The car comes to market fresh from over £4,000 of work, including head gasket and water pump replacement and a full service. The bespoke Chasseur alloys have also been recently refurbished.
The Chasseur is the sort of car that generates questions and interest even amongst the most informed of Jaguar enthusiasts. This car is impressive, and with that recent work and its lengthy MOT, it is ready to use and enjoy.
