1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16

Vendor supplied images

Highlights

  • The vendor informs us that the 112,117 kilometres indicated are warranted
  • German supplied car with just two former owners
  • Desirable 2.5-litre version, far rarer than its 2.3-litre sibling

The Appeal

When Mercedes-Benz decided to take the 190 E racing, they turned to British automotive engineers Cosworth, asking them to develop a four-cylinder engine to compete in the German DTM (touring car championship). Based on the M102 engine in 2.3 and 2.5-litre variants, with four valves per cylinder, the Cosworth power plant proved immensely capable on the racetrack and on the road, with surviving examples now immensely sought after.
Here we have a very presentable 1990 2.5-16 that was supplied new to Germany. We’re informed that it has had just two owners and it’s abundantly clear that they have taken great care of it throughout its life. The 190 has covered relatively few kilometres for a 33 year old car and remains in very good overall condition.
It’s unusual to see this model with the four-speed automatic gearbox, too, so don’t miss this opportunity to finally get your hands on this legendary Mercedes-Benz.

The History and Paperwork

  • Supplied new to Germany
  • Now resides in the Brno
  • The vendor informs us that the car has had just two owners
  • Remains mostly original
  • Rare, especially in comparison to its 2.3-16 siblings
  • Equipped with a number of desirable factory options
  • Original de-registered German documents supplied

The Interior

  • Largely original
  • Anthracite leather upholstery
  • Optioned with rear headrests and ‘make-up mirror’ sun visors
  • Little wear to be seen
  • Tasteful aftermarket  ‘Persian’ overmats
  • Electric seats
In typical Teutonic fashion, this Mercedes-Benz’s interior is conservative and tasteful. Upholstered in Anthracite leather with black plastics to match, there’s little to distract you from the serious business of driving. A hint of Zebrano finds its way onto the gear lever surround, but elsewhere all is finished in black, contributing to a clean layout that ages rather gracefully.
The condition of the leather also wears its age well, with just a little light wear from careful use. The same can be said of the controls which exhibit a slight sheen but nothing more.
The dashboard appears in good order and looks to be really original. It still retains a period Becker Grand Prix radio and we didn’t notice any additional switches or instruments. The headlining looks in good shape and we're informed the carpeting is in fair order as well, although we haven’t seen those curious aftermarket ‘Persian’ overmats. The inside of the boot presents exceedingly well with no excessive wear or damage.

The Exterior

  • Blue-black metallic paint (the original colour)
  • Smart bodywork with no evidence of accident damage
  • Attractive wheels, complete with Continental tyres
  • 16 Valve-specific aerodynamic body kit
  • Electric sliding sunroof
A fast four-door saloon almost always looks good and the 190 E Cosworth are some of the most attractive to date. Fitted with their own unique body kit, which actually made them rather slippery when wind tunnel tested, the 2.5-16 is very distinctive to look at and instantly recognisable to enthusiasts.
The paintwork holds up very nicely in this example and there don’t appear to be many blemishes. There’s certainly no notable damage and the vendor remarks that this car has never been involved in any accidents. The bodywork is in nice shape, with good panel fitment and shut lines. We couldn’t see any obvious corrosion and we’re assured that it is really solid everywhere you look.
All the trims appear in fine fettle, as do the light lenses and all the windows. The car sits on OEM wheels which are shod with high quality Continental tyres.

The Mechanics

  • 2.5-litre four cylinder engine, developed by Cosworth
  • Rare four-speed automatic gearbox
  • New stainless steel exhaust system which apparently cost about €1,200
  • Equipped with a strut brace
  • ASD electronically controlled hydraulic locking differential
Where this Mercedes-Benz gets properly exciting, is when we take a look under the bonnet. A cosworth developed 16 valve 2.5-litre inline four is nestled tight to the bulkhead and was said to produce 201 horsepower when new.
The vendor informs us that the car benefits from years of careful treatment and judicious servicing. As a result, it is said to drive really well with no faults to report. The automatic gearbox selects gears smoothly and the brakes are said to work well.
Renowned for their handling as well as their performance, these 190 E 2.5-16s benefit from Mercedes-Benz’s then state of the art ASD system, ensuring corners can be executed with great precision - even at great speed.

Summary

It isn’t often we see such an original and usable 190 E 2.5-16. An automatic example is especially rare so if it's the one you’ve long been looking for, make sure not to miss making it yours.
