The Appeal

Built as an appealing, yet thrift-friendly sports car, the MR2 was just one example of how many masterstrokes Toyota seemed to be full of towards the end of the 20th century. With a mid-engined layout, agile handling and surprisingly simple mechanics, it was a car that brought any driver out of their shell - charismatic, fun and exciting. A car that lived and breathed enthusiasm.

This 1993 model stands out as a rare, unmodified example with remarkably low mileage. The car's provenance is well-documented, adding to its appeal for collectors and driving enthusiasts alike.

The car's original red paint, though showing some age-commensurate wear, remains eye-catching, while the black leather interior is in very good condition, and retains its original charm with minimal modifications. This MR2 offers an authentic driving experience, true to its original form, and is sure to be a compelling prospect for any enthusiast.

History and Paperwork

  • Registered in 1993
  • Original sales invoice dated 19th July 1993, when the car was bought by Mr. Lawson of Henley-on-Thames from his local Toyota garage
  • Purchased from a caring owner with 63,500 miles on the clock in March 2022
  • Full service carried out after purchase, original alloys refurbished, and a full set of new tyres fitted
  • Comes with a folder including many old MOT certificates and receipts for various work over the years
  • Some limited service history; original service book remains in the glove compartment, but stamps have not been maintained
  • Information folder shows provenance to support the mileage, which is remarkably low for such a driver-friendly model
  • Originally carried the number plate K222 HOT, which was sold to a collector and replaced with the current plate K478 CBU
  • MOT passed with no advisories in March 2024
  • Driven occasionally through spring/summer/autumn and SORN during winter since ownership
  • Recently driven a 300-mile round trip to Essex and back to Derbyshire
  • Currently indicates 65,133 miles

The Condition

  • Paintwork is 30 years old, with only the spoiler having been repainted by the previous owner
  • Close inspection will show imperfections, but overall, the original sunburst red is lovely and eye-catching
  • There are one or two marks in the paintwork and some minor dents, but these do not detract too much from the vehicle's appearance
  • Some light fading, characteristic of red cars
  • Car has a 'T-Top' roof with original interior panels
  • Sills and underneath are in very good condition
  • Some rust/bubbling on the lower doors, though the vendor notes this isn't too far gone to be a problem in the foreseeable future
  • They do however highlight it would be wise to consider a strip down and respray in the next two or three years
  • Wheels refurbished and in great condition
  • Tyres have under 1,000 miles of use
  • Black leather interior in really good condition
  • Original carpets show little sign of wear
  • Seats show some signs of wear but are remarkably good for the age
  • Trim and other interior components are in good condition
  • Apart from installing a modern media unit (with car play), it is as it was when first sold
  • Driving experience is authentic to the true MR2 experience given the highly original state of the car

The Mechanics

  • NA 2.0L 3S-GE engine producing 158 PS (116 kW; 156 hp) when new
  • This is the original, normally aspirated (NA) 2-litre engine with under 66,000 miles usage
  • Manual transmission with 5 gears
  • The vendor informs is that the car is mechanically sound with no issues for the current owner in over 2 years of ownership
  • OSF suspension spring top mount and bearing replaced in March 2023
  • Replacement exhaust CAT installed in March 2023 by the local Toyota main dealer/garage
  • The vendor notes that it looks and feels like the car that rolled out of the showroom in Henley on Thames over 31 years ago

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
