The Appeal

When Porsche launched the GTS as the ultimate evolution of the 928, they created what is now widely regarded as one of the finest modern GT cars. With a hearty and smooth V8 drivetrain and well-appointed cabin, it has made a name for itself as an all-time great. Manual examples are particularly sought after and becoming rarer by the year – while figures vary slightly, it seems that this is one of 44 UK manual models that were ever built.
This example has been very well cared for, preserved by its last two owners as part of a couple of private collections and subject to careful maintenance and servicing by marque specialists. As a car of genuine rarity, this handsome and stylish coupé should be of real interest to Porsche enthusiasts the world over.

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in November 1992
  • 1993 model year car
  • First registered in January 1994
  • Collector / enthusiast owned and stored indoors as part of a private collection
  • Now being offered for sale as the vendor is downsizing their collection
  • Comprehensively recommissioned mechanically in 2018 by marque specialists ‘928 Spares’ at a cost of £8,500
  • Complete with a very large history file, incorporating the owner’s handbooks, service book, numerous invoices for maintenance and servicing and many old MOT certificates
  • The official service book shows a total of 19 stamps from a mix of main dealers and independent specialists
  • An invoice is present for an oil service in May of 2022
  • Excellent MOT record, with current MOT to November 2023
  • 120,420 miles indicated, confirmed by service and MOT records
  • Two sets of keys

The Interior

  • Classic grey leatherette with leather seats
  • Air conditioning recently refurbished
  • Electric sunroof, windows and door mirrors
  • Blaupunkt DAB stereo with ESB, Aux and hands-free phone connection
The grey leatherette swathing the dash and door cards nicely matches the leather of the seats, which are themselves finished with contrast Marine Blue piping. All of the upholstery is in very good order, with minimal evidence of wear considering the vehicle’s age, the only notable wear is on the outer bolster of the driver’s seat. Otherwise, damage and tears are conspicuous by their absence.
Complementing the upholstery, the light grey headlining appears to be secure and undamaged, with no staining we could see. Similarly, the carpets and matched floor mats show nicely, looking to be free from significant marks or damage. All of this makes the cabin nice and light, with an airy feel.
All of the switchgear presents in good order, being in fine fettle with some light patina and blemishes, but no more than should be expected for the age of the car. Overall, everything is very nicely preserved and the vendor tells us that everything functions just as it should. They recently found that the air conditioning was not working, but this was fixed by Northway Porsche in July of this year.
As with all 928s, it’s a surprisingly practical and roomy car, with a good size boot. It includes a load cover and cargo net too, which adds a neat touch of utility.

The Exterior

  • Midnight Blue Metallic (F8F8) paintwork
  • Optional top tinted windscreen
  • Original Cup alloy wheels
Presented in Midnight Blue Metallic, this GTS really does cut a dash. It’s a handsome shade that suits the car very well, showing off the fine proportions and elegant lines very well. Here it looks to be in very good order too, with a nice lustre and no damage or major blemishes that we could see. The vendor tells us that the car has had some of the paintwork freshened in the past, which is why it still shows so well.
The car’s bodywork looks to be in good order. Usual problem areas such as the wheel arches and sills look nice and solid, with no signs of corrosion we could see. Panel gaps look even and straight, while the external trim and badging is looking very well for its age, clearly having been well cared for.  All of the glass elements and light lenses – including those excellent pop-ups – appear to be nice and clear too, with no cracks or chips we could discern.
Wheels are the original 17-inch Cup alloys, which don’t show any evidence of kerbing or lacquer peel as far as we can see, and are shod in a new set of Pirelli P-Zero Rosso Tyres (fitted in July of this year).
We’re told by the vendor that the underside is in good order and is “as expected” for the vehicle’s age and mileage.

The Mechanics

  • 5,397cc transverse V8
  • Five-speed manual transmission
  • Recent full inspection by Northway Porsche (July 2022)
That water-cooled 32-valve V8 is a proper masterpiece – smooth, powerful and really quite advanced for the time. Offering 350hp to the rear wheels through a manual transmission, it makes it a very satisfying driver’s car too. The engine bay presents very well, clean and tidy with no signs we could see of leaks or overheating.
In 2018 the maintenance record shows the car underwent a significant mechanical recommissioning by renowned specialists ‘928 Spares’. At a cost of £8,500, it was clearly extensive and should give the new owner real confidence in the mechanical integrity of this fine GT car.
We’re assured by the vendor that the car drives “like new” and that there are no mechanical issues they are aware of.

Summary

Rare, collectible, practical and genuinely thrilling to drive, this 928 GTS is an excellent example of a very fine GT car. Whether you’re looking to add to an existing collection or have simply always wanted a manual GTS, this urbane coupé simply has to be considered.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
