1996 Bentley Brooklands

Highlights

 • Super-luxury saloon
 • Outstanding interior condition
 • 6.8-litre V8 engine
 • Reassuring file of paperwork

The Appeal

Launched in 1992 as a replacement for the Bentley Mulsanne S and Bentley Eight models, the Brooklands was intended as a less expensive alternative to the Turbo R.

The styling, underpinnings and 6.8-litre engine were shared with the Turbo R, and the model initially lacked the more powerful car’s turbocharger, although a turbo version came along in 1996.

The V8 engine drives the rear wheels through a 4-speed auto ‘box, and while the car’s angular design and interior styling continued the themes of previous Bentley and Rolls-Royce cars, the model was the first to move the gear selector from the steering column to the centre console.

N 750 MDD has clearly been well looked-after during its life, with an interior that shows few signs of the car’s age, a comprehensive file of paperwork and only a few minor electrical and bodywork issues to attend to.

The History and Paperwork

 • MoT valid until April 2023
 • Thick folder of invoices and MoT certificates
 • Main-dealer and specialist service history for most of its life
 • Mileage appears to be genuine
N 750 MDD was first registered in February 1996 and the V5 document records seven owners prior to the vendor.

The car has previously carried a private number plate. The vendor purchased the car in April 2021, since when he has covered only around 1500 miles in it.

The service book records that the car was serviced at Bentley/RR dealers throughout its early life, and the vendor understands that the car was serviced at the family business of a later owner. Combined with the many MoT certificates, the service history would seem to verify the mileage as genuine.

Having owned the car for only a year, the vendor is planning to move house in the near future and will not have the garage space he currently enjoys (which stores three cars), so has reluctantly decided to part with the car.

The Interior

 • Leather seats all in excellent condition
 • Walnut dash, door panels and wooden trims all in outstanding condition.
 • Comfortable and relaxed driving position
Open the doors and straight away it’s clear that this is a car that has been cherished.

The grey leather seats have very few signs of wear, while the dashboard, centre console, door panels and wooden trim all look excellent.

The interior, both front and back, oozes the luxury and prestige for which the Bentley brand is renowned. The driving position is as comfortable as one would expect and the controls all fall readily to hand.
The footwells both front and back have been protected by grey sheepskin overmats, which the vendor believes are original, and underneath these the carpets are remarkably clean and unworn, although the Bentley-branded rubber panel beneath the pedals has broken in places.
The stereo is a later addition and includes a DAB radio. There’s a power amplifier for the stereo cleverly concealed behind a panel in the boot.
In the boot, the carpet liner is generally clean and unworn bar a few small marks and a slight stain above the offside wheel arch. Beneath the carpet liner, a panel conceals a spare wheel in excellent condition and with the tyre cover still in place.

But the real highlight here is behind a folding panel – two slide-out drawers contain the original jack, warning triangle and wheel brace, plus an RR-branded toolkit complete with original tools and spare bulbs.

It’s rare to find all these items intact in a 26-year-old car! The boot also contains a (bagged) car cover that the vendor will include with the car.

The Exterior

 • Classic Bentley styling
 • Striking pearlescent Peacock Blue paintwork
 • Immaculate wheels and brightwork
The car looked resplendent in the spring sunshine on the day of our photo shoot, and the Peacock Blue paint suits the car’s styling.

Closer inspection reveals a few minor rust bubbles, on the front wings and on the surround of the rear window, but in general the bodywork is very good for a car of its age.

At the rear, the number plate has been stuck on over a previous owner’s private plate, and this will no doubt be something a new owner will wish to address, as it spoils the look of the car.

The car is fitted with Turbo R wheels rather than the Brooklands model originals; these are presumably a later addition and all four look to be immaculate, with no evidence of corrosion or having been kerbed, while the tyres were replaced shortly before the vendor purchased the car and he estimates they have done no more than 2000 miles.

Elsewhere the badges, bumpers and brightwork are all in extremely good condition.

The Mechanics

 • Powerful 6.75-litre engine
 • Clean and tidy under the bonnet and underneath
 • Starts and runs well
The car starts readily and has a healthy engine note.

The gear selector clicks smoothly into gear and the car pulls away as it should. The vendor says that the car has never had any issues during his tenure, and he has really enjoyed driving it.

He reports that the car has a minor oil leak, thought to be from the power-steering pump, and this is something the new owner will no doubt wish to address.

The vendor also reports a few minor electrical issues: the electric adjustment on the front seats no longer works, and neither do the electric mirrors. The car comes with three keys and two remote locking controls.

Under the bonnet, everything looks to be in good order, and underneath the car there are no visible issues bar that minor oil leak.

Summary

Bentley: the name itself conjures up images of luxury and opulence.

With only 1380 examples built, this Brooklands is an increasingly rare care and while there are a few minor issues to address, that comprehensive history file should reassure any potential new owner that this car offers many more years of refined and pleasurable motoring.

There can be few more sumptuous driving environments than the inside of a Bentley, and this is one that has clearly been owned by considerate and respectful custodians.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
