The Appeal 

The Peugeot 205 GTI is widely acknowledged as the greatest hot hatch from the classic 80s and 90s era. At just 850kg it is a road-legal go-kart, one of the most nimble, agile and hugely entertaining cars every to be put on four wheels. 
Despite a choice of 1.6 and 1.9litre engines, for many enthusiasts Peugeot didn’t fit the best version of the XUG engine - the XUG-JA 16valve motor developed for the 205 Turbo 16 rally car.  Known as the Mi16, it adds 30bhp and those 16 valves plus a stronger build.  
This 205 RestoMod solves that problem. It has been professionally built on a late model 1996 three door Italian Red car and uprated with the Mi16 motor, Bilstein B6 suspension, GTI trim and equipment with all extras including a Becker stereo with Canton subwoofer system.  It is entirely road legal but also usefully comes with a "Track Tool Kit" consisting of a de-catted race pipe and sports exhaust as well as a free straight intake tract that can be installed in about 1 hour.
This is a proper one-off built in 2021 and 2022 by the seller to a high standard. It comes to market with an advisory-free TUV inspection to August 2024.

The joy of the 205 is that the 205’s modular construction enabled the vendor to undertake the modifications without having to drill any holes in the body.  The structure is designed to take all engines, gearboxes and suspensions. This means that the works corrosion protection remains intact.

We are told that the body for the project comes from a 1996 205 Forever with all the extras such as panoramic roof.  A lady on Lake Constance bought the car new at the age of 65 and drove and cared for it for 20 years without an accident. It was always garaged and was acquired with a verified 52,297 km. The car and odometer can be seen on the photos.

All the work was carefully carried out by a Peugeot 205 specialist in 2021 and 2022. It took about 400 - 500 hrs. All screws are original Peugeot and preserved with Mike Sanders grease.

The car is registered and can be test-driven near Rostock on the Baltic Sea. All modifications are approved by the  German TÜV and entered in the papers in April 2022. The rebuild was done with original contemporary parts, which is why the car will get a historic license plate in Germany in 2 years when it is 30 years old.

The vendor tells us that the car is in mint condition because so many parts have been renewed or overhauled. There is patina on the leather of the front seats and signs of wear such as small scratches on the almost 30-year-old paintwork. It drives like a new car. The car is described by the seller as rust-free, accident-free, non-smoking and always garaged. Original service folder, both original keys.

The Mechanics 

  • 1,891cc Mi16 engine with 16 valves and 160bhp 
  • This DOHC unit also has hydraulic tappets and was evolved from the 205 Turbo 16 rally car
  • 5spd manual gearbox
  • Updated suspension and exhaust system as outlined below 

The axles, rims and interior (seats, dashboard with instruments, wiring harness) are from a 1992 1.9 GTI. For the front seats, the original red and black fabric has been renewed and seat heating has been installed. The GTI speedometer has been set to the mileage of the Forever. The axles and Speedline rims were blasted and powder-shot. 

Wheel suspensions, wheel bearings, brake system, drive shafts, Bilstein B6 shock absorbers, exhaust system etc. are new OEM parts. The GTI fender flares and side strips come from the Peugeot accessories and are glued. The MI16 emblems are from 405 MI16. Some of the new parts can be seen in the photos. The Bonnet with the large scoop comes from a  red 1990 automatic.

The D6C engine with the BE3 gearbox comes from a BX GTI 16V crashed in the early nineties and has run about 70,000 km according to the seller. It lay in the storage for over 25 years. The entire engine electronics, cooling system, timing belt, water pump, alternator, starter motor, etc. are new. The Bosch injectors were replaced by selected ones from Spoox. For installation in the 205, a shortened intake manifold from Spoox and an exhaust manifold adapted to the 205 were also fitted. 

In addition, the engine was fitted with an aluminium oil pan and an oil-water heat exchanger. Since a catalytic converter is required for registration in Germany, the engine ECU from a Peugeot 405 MI16 with catalytic converter was installed. The BE 3 gearbox with 4 shift levels received a new release shaft bearing, a new clutch and shift rods with stainless steel joints from Spoox.

The car comes with a track tool kit consisting of a stainless steel race pipe without catalytic converter and with big bore muffler and the parts for a straight open intake in the engine compartment. We are told that it can be converted in 1-2 hours and is then very loud!
