The Appeal
There are rare and exotic Italian supercars, and then there is Alejandro de Tomaso’s final creation - the Guara. Just 52 were built, of which only 38 were coupes like this car. It is one of the final two-dozen coupes built with the supercharged Ford Cobra 4.6L V8 325bhp engine.
The Guara evolved out of Maserati’s Barchetta Stradale show car. When fiat bought Maserati, the project became a De Tomaso. Combining high tech fibreglass and kevlar bodywork with a lightweight aluminium backbone chassis and Formula One-infused suspension, this was a rare and, quite frankly, brilliant creation.
Finished in silver with a highly preserved black leather cabin, this 2001 Guara has covered less than 6,000 kms from new. As you would expect, it is in fine condition, only a couple of minor points to note in photos.
No high end supercar collection is surely complete without a Guara. Here is a chance, and it is one that doesn’t come along often, to acquire one of the lowest mileage examples available.

For his final creation, Alejandro De Tomaso didn’t mess about. Every element of the Guara feels like an exercise in ‘no expense spared’ design and specification. The lightweight bodywork is formed from fibreglass reinforced with kevlar. The aluminium backbone chassis also focusses on weight saving.
This car’s silver paintwork presents very well and the bodywork is equally well kept. There are a couple of points to note in photos but nothing significant.
Inside the cabin is a pleasing mix of luxury and sporting intent. These cars are known for the comfort and space. The handmade bucket seats in black leather show barely any wear and the other trim features such as Alcantara dash top and carbon fibre trim are also well kept.
The Mechanics
- Ford ‘Cobra’ 4,601cc supercharged V8 engine delivering 325bhp
- 6-speed manual transmission
- Matching numbers engine and gearbox according to seller
- Suspension features Formula One-inspired elements
Beyond the arresting styling lies an engine and running gear to match the looks. The final 24 Guaras, built from 1998 to 2004, were equipped with Ford’s ‘Cobra’ 4.6L V8 engine, here in supercharged form and mated to a 6spd manual gearbox. It is an inspiring combination because it delivers decent power with decent reliability for such a low volume exotic car.
To transfer that power to the road, the Guara features suspension that was honed with input from Formula One engineers. Contemporary reviewers highly rated the way it drove and handled, describing it as like a road-going race car.
This car has covered a mere 5,697 kms from new.
