THE BACKGROUND
The 996 is actually a bit of a key moment in 911 history, with the company moving into a new millennium and having to adapt to the times. Introduced in 1997, the 996 ran to 2004 (the high-performance versions till 2006), it was the first all new chassis platform since the original 911 with a new water-cooled engine.
In technical terms it was a major change from the original car, however it kept that Iconic styling the Stuttgart fans know and love to this day. Talking of the styling, the new platform allowed for a sleeker body with a more aerodynamic profile, redesigned interior and perhaps the most noticeable feature of the front end, the ‘fried egg’ headlights instead of the previous ‘bugeye’ headlights.
Aside from the radical new change from the original 911 to the new platform the 996 was based on, the car was also responsible for saving Porsche from financial issues. Back in the 1990’s Porsche was in trouble, their signature flat 6 was reaching its limits of potential and the emission landscape was changing threatening to phase out old designs.
Porsche teamed with Toyota to improve manufacturing processes as well as introducing the 996 alongside the entry level Boxster, bringing down manufacturing costs and opening up the target audience for its products. The 996 then was a 911 for a new millennium with new technology, a newly revived factory and a new engine, it was the Porsche model that signalled changes in Porsche and the continued dominance of the sports car market.
THE HISTORY
The car presented here benefits from a full-service history from main dealers or specialists and comes recently serviced with a new battery, 2 new front tyres and a new MOT. The latest MOT was carried out in December 2020, at 132,226 with no advisories.
THE PAPERWORK
The car comes with the V5 as well as a suite of service and owner’s manuals alongside MOT history to back up the mileage and care this car has received over its life. The car is registered as a Cat ‘S’ on the HPI check (which is supplied with the car) from some damage to the rear wing and back light assembly. This has been professionally repaired and inspected in 2019 however and the car is back to prime condition.
THE INTERIOR
The grey leather interior is in exceptional condition with only some very minor marks to the high traffic areas such as the centre console. Upon inspection, there were no rips, tears or serious marks to the upholstery or carpet inside the car with everything inside working as it should.
The featured ‘stacked’ dials are in great condition also, clearly showing all aspects of the car’s health to the driver. The central screen works as it should and gives a pleasing contrast to the grey trimmed dash with its black highlighted cover. In summary then, this Porsche’s interior lives up to the expectation Porsche fans have come to associate with the brand and won’t disappoint.
THE EXTERIOR
The exterior of the Porsche is also in fantastic condition for its age, with very little, if any marks or blemishes in the paintwork. Any evidence of the damage to the rear is gone showing the quality in the professional repair. Those easy recognisable ‘fried egg’ headlights have no hazing or cloudiness, along with the clarity of the rear lights this 19-year-old car still looks just as presentable to the Porsches of today. There is however a small crack in the windscreen which may result as an advisory on an MOT.
The wheels have little to no curbing or damage on them and only some very minor lacquer peel on the front passenger side, paying testament to Porsche’s manufacturing process from the factory. There is also a spare included with the sale. With new front tyres and the silver colour scheme, contrasting against the deep blue metallic paint, the car gives off a clean, serious look from the outside, working well with the timeless side profile of the famous sportscar.
THE MECHANICS
As you’d expect from Stuttgart’s finest, there’s not much to see in the engine bay, however, even though the 3.6L flat six boxer engine lacks in visual access, it more than makes up for in performance, noise and refinement.
This particular unit is relative low miles for a 19-year-old car with full specialist/dealer service history to ensure it’s always at its best. The engine fired into life without hesitation and idled smoothly with no knocks, noises or squeals, all hoses and lines look to be in good condition, further consolidating the fact that this car has been well looked after.
THE APPEAL
Porsche have been known for some time to make some of, if not the best sports cars in the world and the 996 Carrera was a pivotal and important car for the brand itself marking a turning point for the company stepping into a new millennium.
With cars like these being loved and cared for throughout their time, there is nothing to suggest that this car would not bring the same thrills as newer models for a fraction of the price. This particular car comes with everything you would want to make sure you can enjoy plenty of miles driving one of the best sports cars from one of the most prestigious brands in the world.
If you’re looking for a car that you’d look back after parking it up, this should definitely be worthy of your attention.
