The Appeal
By January 1999, Mercedes-Benz was the majority stakeholder of AMG and so keen to make the most of its new partnership, (which would shortly become outright acquisition), the AMG moniker and its trademark enhancements were applied to an increasing number of new Mercedes-Benz products.
The SL55 was a particular highlight. Based upon the R230 platform’s SL 500, it gained a hand-built supercharged version of the inimitable M113 V8 which produced a physics-bending 493 horsepower and 516 pounds-feet of torque. Coupled with the R230’s svelte styling, opulent interior and oh-so-clever ‘Vario Roof’, the SL55 AMG represented a winning formula.
This 2003 example is in lovely condition for its age with a mere 68,498 miles on the clock and just two registered keepers to its name. Well specified from new, benefitting from numerous main dealer services, and offered with an advisory-free MOT until March 2025, this modern classic Mercedes is mightily tempting.
