NO RESERVE - 1991 Mercedes-Benz 190E

Highlights

  • Just 3 former keepers
  • Believed to be in original condition
  • Well maintained and cared for

The Appeal

Although perhaps better known for the Cosworth tweaked and Evolution designated models, the W201 platform is arguably one of Mercedes’ greatest to date. The series of 190 saloons was initially targeted as a somewhat entry-level luxury vehicle, packed to the rafters with luxury comforts, and well-engineered tech.
As time has passed, the W201 platform has aged like fine wine, with many enthusiasts holding on to the legend brought to the model by its motorsport success and humble road achievements. This particular 190 E presents everything great about the series and now presents itself in great condition for its age.

The History and Paperwork

  • 3 former UK keepers
  • Well maintained
  • Family-owned for 26 years
  • Mercedes handbooks
  • MOT'd until 31st January 2023
  • V5C document present
This 190 E is likely one of the few with such a low owner count, having spent the last 26 years within the same family. Over the years, the vehicle has been the keepers’ pride and joy, receiving a great deal of maintenance along the way, and being a rather dependable companion. In fact, it is only due to the ULEZ expansion that this classy Benz now awaits a new home, where it will hopefully be treasured by the new keeper.
As mentioned above, the vehicle benefits from years of maintenance and has plenty of paperwork to support the fact. Included with the vehicle is a stack of invoices detailing previous parts & labour, such as brakes, a rear exhaust section, window regulator, new water pump, rebuilt engine head, tyres and more. Also included are the original Mercedes handbooks, previous MOT certificates, the V5C document, a Haynes manual and the original tool kit and jack.
Although not required to be noted on the V5, it should be noted that the vehicle was involved in an incredibly minor shunt from the rear in 2017. As virtually no visible damage was sustained, no repairs were undertaken, although the insurance provider was eventually able to identify two very small “crumple” points to the left and front end of the boot floor. These marks are said to measure about 4 inches x 1 inch long and are not typically visible underneath the boot lining. For added peace of mind, the insurance inspector assured the current keeper that these were merely cosmetic and had no structural significance.

The Interior

  • Original interior
  • Good condition for its age
  • Pioneer KE-3500 head unit
  • Retractable sunroof
  • Spare tyre, toolkit & jack in the boot
The car shows off the original Cloth Brazil patterned interior, which presents itself in fair condition for its age, in keeping with the vehicle’s mileage. As is to be expected, there are signs of wear and minor defects to note, including a tear to both the driver’s seat bolster and the driver’s door card armrest.
Otherwise, the seats, carpeting and upholstery seem to be in rather fair condition, showing only the expected signs of age. The headlining follows suit, with a few potentially rectifiable marks in the material.
Other than requiring a new bulb for the clock & tachometer, all electronic controls and instruments within the cabin are believed to be in full working order. Controls also seemingly show rather minimal wear to the contact points.
In the boot, you’ll find a spare, the original jack & toolkit, along with the hazard warning triangle for emergencies. As rainwater currently has a tendency to find its way into the boot, the current keeper would recommend renewing the rubber seals, in order to prevent water ingress.

The Exterior

  • Smoke Silver Metallic paintwork
  • Good condition for the age of the vehicle
  • Believed to be original
The Smoke Silver paint suits the 190 E perfectly, only elevating the saloon’s classy styling and road presence. As one would expect given the age of the vehicle, and having spent the majority of its time within the city, the paintwork does of course show various defects. Defects to note include scuff marks to both front and rear bumpers, a small mark to the left side of the rear bumper following the aforementioned impact, a patch of scratching on the bonnet, discolouration around the aerial mounting, scratch marks on the boot, and of course the expected chips from use.
That being said, quite a few of these defects such as the marks on both bumpers are believed to be easily alleviated, and would likely benefit from a thorough polish. The paintwork is certainly in keeping with what you would expect for a vehicle of this age, especially with the mileage taken into account.
All trim components and details follow suit, with a few signs of age to note. The front grille shows a minor bend in one of the slats, and the headlamp now shows an epoxy repair following impact from a stone. With this in mind, if you’re after a perfect finish, the current keeper would recommend a replacement headlamp lens and TLC throughout.
The wheels seemingly show what could very well be the original finish, and are in good condition for their age. There are of course instances of surface deterioration, curbing marks and a fair amount of brake dust buildup to be noted. That being said, there is plenty of tyre tread left to enjoy, and the wheels present the opportunity for a welcome refurbishment.
Overall, this vehicle shows signs of age in keeping with the city life and regular usage. However, the vehicle still retains a fair finish for its age and continues to attract the attention of onlookers, due to its classy styling and rarity. Buyers can either further preserve the original finish or use this as a blank canvas for a light restoration project.

The Mechanics

  • Plenty of maintenance history
  • New rear exhaust section in 2021
  • New brakes in 2019 & 2018
  • New battery in 2019
  • New radiator in 2015
  • Cylinder head rebuilt in 2010
  • Multi-rib drive belt replaced in 2016
Buyers will be glad to know that the current keeper informs us that the vehicle fires up, accelerates and brakes exactly as it should, with no known issues changing gears. Although this 190 E has proven to be a rather dependable vehicle over the years, there are of course signs of age to mention.
For starters, there is a small oil leak noticeable from the front of the engine, which may require attention. The floor of the battery tray requires attention, having suffered from corrosion. The current keeper also reports an occasional noise on start-up, which is believed to perhaps be a sticky starter motor, as well as a minor clicking noise when turning with the wheels at full-lock at very slow speed. Other points have been noted as advisories in the recent MOT history, such as a front prop shaft flexible coupling which was reported to be slightly deteriorated. The vehicle pulls ever so slightly to the left when driving, although this could very easily be as easily remedied as a simple wheel alignment.
In recent years, the current keeper also reports that cylinder 4 has suffered from fouled spark plugs. The current owner has simply replaced the spark plug when the issue arises, purely due to how little the vehicle is used. However, it is recommended that the engine is checked over by a mechanic, as engine work may be on the cards for this vehicle, given the mileage and age.
Overall, the car still presents itself in a drivable manner, but would greatly benefit from light attention. If you fancy a light project, this could very well be the perfect vehicle to work on over the winter, and wouldn’t take much work from a skilled individual to return to full working order.

Summary

This 190 E presents a rather interesting opportunity for buyers, perhaps as an ideal light restoration project. The vehicle still showcases its original finish both inside and out, and whilst the car does currently run and drive as needed, this Mercedes would benefit from some love.

The vehicle is perhaps more suited to an enthusiast who can provide the mechanical attention required, and then use the vehicle on an occasional touring basis.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.
