The Background

Produced by Mercedes-Benz between 1989-2001 the R129 SL-Class was a sporty two-seater roadster built to rival the offerings from other manufactures.

Within the lifespan Mercedes produced 213,000 SL’s in varying spec levels from the basic 2.8l inline six to the crazy AMG 7.3L V12.

The one we have here is from the first facelift with the M104 straight six engine and aesthetical changes that would remain until end of production.

The History

The current owner acquired the car from Bridge Classic Cars in December of 2020, and it is still in the same sort of condition that it left their dealership.

However, the current owner has done a few little jobs on the car which include N/S/F lower suspension ball joint replacement, Centre Steering Damper replacement and the boot lid central brake light replacement. There is history with the car that goes back all the way to 2010 where you can see it's been around the London area for an extended period of time before moving down to Surrey with the current owner.

Don’t be put off by the large number of owners that the V5 presents, this is still a very comfortable and quite low milage in comparison to the number of owners.

The Paperwork

The paperwork that comes with this car comes in a nicely presented binder in date order and shows the MOT history that is available, invoices for work that has been done which allow you to see that this car has indeed been cared for.

Within the paperwork you will see there are instructions for the hardtop roof stand that the current owner purchased, this comes with the car and is currently complete so the new owner should be conscious of the need to transport this item back with them.

The Interior

The interior is in rather good condition, the passenger side is the best side as this obviously doesn’t get used as often as the drivers side which is showing some marks in the kick plate, and carpet but this is only down the number of times people get into and out of the vehicle.

The center armrest too is showing signs that the car has been used but this is where the interior snags stop. It is a lovely place to sit and enjoy a drive with the roof up or down. The coolest feature on the inside of this Mercedes is the floating head rests that hover above the top of the seat.

The two plus two seating is like any sports car within this category, you have lots of space for the front passengers, but the rear passengers may not enjoy that much leg room, so because of this the rear seats are in good condition.

The rear panels do fold down with the little catch on the back of the seat, the current owner seemed to believe the catch on the rear right panel was broken, but during the photoshoot we were able to pop it up and make it click, so it seems that this now works.

The Exterior

Finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic the exterior of this Mercedes is in great condition, there are only a few age-related marks around the car but what else can you expect from a car of this age. All four alloys are in great condition and really set the rest of the car off.

The fabric hood goes up and down as it should in a fairly quick time, it all latches in correctly and there are no splits to the plastic windows around the rear.

There are a few areas where there are some deuteration to the fabric but nothing that will hinder the use of it in all weathers. There is also the original hard-top hood, but this was at the current owners residence at the time of the photoshoot, It should be attached to the car before the new owner collects it.

The Mechanics

This older Mercedes Benz SL280 starts on the key every time only taking a fraction longer than a modern car would, but then again, the battery does have to start a big engine. The automatic gearbox is also in good condition and pulls well as you’d imagine from a 190hp sports car.

Within the current ownership a few mechanical parts have been replaced, these include the N/S/F lower suspension ball joint replacement and the Centre Steering Damper replacement.

The Appeal

This is a great modern classic car that will soon become rather desirable. It unlocks the door to explore the UK with both the freedom of a convertible and the comfort of a hardtop depending on what the weather is doing. This is a great idea from Mercedes and allows the owner to enjoy the car all year round.

With this being a reasonably low milage example and being an old Mercedes, you can imagine that it will go on for a lot longer than the 70,000 miles it has already done.

Whoever owns this car next will for sure have a great car for the money, the current owner says it is one of the best cars he has ever owned and always puts a smile on their face wherever they go.
