Description
The Jaguar “S” type was produced from 1963 until 1968. The car was a major development of the MK2 with independent rear suspension, a similar interior to the 420G and significant improvements in road-holding and ride comfort over the MK2. It was intended to be a replacement for the MK2 but the older car sold surprisingly well into the mid 60’s. Confusingly, the “S” type’s intended replacement, the 420 sold poorly so Jaguar ended up keeping all three models in production until the arrival of the XJ6 in 1968.
This car is a 1965 3. 8 S in Black with a red interior. It came to us as a bereavement sale and had been in storage for many years when we bought it. We have just finished a fairly costly re-commissioning including a cylinder head overhaul, fuel system overhaul (carbs and fuel pumps) an engine service including new leads, cap rotor arm, plugs, points, oil and filter, rear brakes overhaul, clutch hydraulic overhaul including new fluid and flexi hose. We have also fitted four new matching radial tyres, a new bonnet release cable, original spec boot mat, new brake servo and a new section of exhaust and various other items. The front brakes had been overhauled before we bought it and the callipers and flexi hoses have been replaced at some stage in the recent past.
As you can see from the photos the car presents very well. The underside is also in excellent solid condition, the paint finish is very good and the chrome is very presentable with some minor imperfections. The interior is all original with a very pleasing “patina”. We have just carried out some test miles and it is running and driving well. We also noticed, when the head was off that the ports have been polished - a minor tweak that may provide a little extra power- it certainly goes very well!
