The Mercedes-Benz W113 chassis was the second generation of the “SL” series of roadsters and coupes produced. It followed the legendary 300SL as well as the 190SL, so it had some large shoes to fill. The W113 has a very sophisticated chassis for it’s time, with Independent rear suspension and disc brakes up front. It was also the first Mercedes-Benz produced with radial tires, improving handling greatly. The 280SL was released in 1967 and came with a new 2. 8L engine that produced a healthy 170hp. There were three options for a gearbox, a 4 speed automatic, a 4 speed manual, or a 5 speed manual. In the United States, the best-selling market for the 280SL, the 4 speed automatic was the most popular option.
Presented here is a quite nice example of the W113 280SL. It is sporting an ivory paint job and has a brown interior. Under the hood is the correct M130 2. 8L fuel injected engine in beautiful condition. Just behind the engine is a 4 speed manual transmission, an uncommon and very desirable option for an American market car. The Gearbox shifts beautifully and the clutch pedal feels great. The engine starts up extremely easily and runs and idles very smooth. This car gives you a wonderful driving experience driving down the road.
This car is an excellent mix of restored and original. It received a paint job in the late 90s that is cracking in some locations, so the car could use a fresh paint job. The paint on this car does look great from 15 feet away, but its age does show when you are up close. The body on this 280SL is in great overall condition though. The panel gaps throughout the car are excellent and the doors shut like new. The seat fronts and bottoms have been reupholstered and feel and look excellent. This car would be an excellent candidate to perform a cosmetic restoration on, or just buy and drive.
