SUMMARY
Supplied new to a wealthy London Businessman, by Woking Motors Mercedes, of Walton-on-Thames in November 1996, this car really would have been quite a status symbol back then. He later, and very generously passed the car to his Chauffeur, who then subsequently, through another party, sold the car to to an Aston Martin Chief engineer, whom later sold it to Avantgarde Mercedes. The reason for this sale was he also had another C140 (an S600 Coupe) and realistically couldn't keep both cars. In 2015 the car was sold to a well known Mercedes-Benz Club officer, and former W140 model captain, and from whom I've just acquired the car. From this ownership history, you can see this car, unlike the majority of W140/ C140's, has fortunately not fallen into the wrong hands, and as such has been correctly and sympathetically maintained, throughout it's entire life; this is as also demonstrated by the comprehensive service history.
Costing around £80, 000, some 22 years ago (that equates to around £150, 000 in "today's money"), these cars were the reserve of the extremely well heeled, to say the least. I've also always said that the W140 was probably the most thoroughly engineered car ever made, but less well known one that also came very close to bankrupting Mercedes back in the early 1990's. However, Mercedes just don't do failure, and the model went on to be a resounding success. I've always said because of this, the W140, and especially the C140 Coupe (Mercedes Coupes all generally become bona-fida Classics) is bound for greatness as a classic; this is now eventually happening, with demand for excellent, low mileage examples ever growing, as discerning buyer realise the W140 was a game changer in its sector; these cars were nothing short of an engineering masterpiece, and a lesson in abject quality, the likes of which I really don't think we'll see again.
Finished in very rare Alexandrite Green, with soft Beige Nappa Leather, I firmly believe this to be one of the finest W140 Coupes currently available. As previously mentioned, the last two owners have been Mercedes Club members, and as a result this particular car was featured in the Club's magazine, in 2016. Also, over the last three years, it's been a regular attendee at various shows up and down the country, and more notably won "Best in Class" at the Mercedes-Benz Club National Concours in 2016. It's also won numerous other show awards since, this, I hope will demonstrate the quality and condition of this car.
Being the post '96 face-lift model, it thankfully doesn't suffer the well documented problems that plagued the earlier W140's, notably the bio-degradable engine wiring loom and the propensity to eat expensive distributor caps; the M119. 980 V8 engine in this car has the later distributor'less ignition system. Among the many other revisions of the facelift model, parking sensors and the 5-speed Auto gear box are probably the most welcome updates.
So, if you're looking for one of these great cars, and want one of the best out there, and one which comes with superb history and provenance, this rather special example, has to be a contender. It's always been said the best examples appreciate the most, so this car could also be seen as an investment too; if you're in doubt, just look at the current values of its predecessor; the W126 SEC.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don't just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won't notice…I just couldn't do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
