SUMMARY
This beautiful W123 280CE Coupe was supplied new by Charles Sidney of Bradford, (now Mercedes-Benz of Bradford and my local dealership). It was bought by a gentleman from Ilkley who clearly cherished it for almost 26 years, from 1985, right through to 2011, when he was forced to give up driving, due to his advancing years. It was subsequently bought by the owner of the garage (a prestige car specialist) who'd looked after the car for the original owner since 2004. Prior to this it was looked after by the supplying dealer, up to around 1997, then by Cragside Mercedes, Harrogate (now Mercedes-Benz of Harrogate and formerly Croft & Blackburn) between 1997 to 2004.
More recently, the garage owner sold the car, in 2015, when it was bought by a Mercedes Club member, who ostensibly only used the car for shows, and runs out on fine days.
It's also very clear judging by the condition of the car, and it's virtually unblemished MOT history that it has been garaged most of its life. The bodywork, although not perfect, is in superb condition, with only very minor stone chips, and a couple of panels are slightly off-shade in some lights, but more importantly there's no blisters, rust and/ or poor/ bodged repairs. Chrome work is all in excellent order too; this is very important as the chrome trim for these cars is now becoming quite difficult (and expensive) to obtain. Interior is also in superb order with just minimal wear to the drivers seat outer bolster. Needless to say everything works exactly as it should.
This is also probably the best driving W123 I've come across in many years; anyone who knows these cars will tell you that the W123 is notorious for it's somewhat indirect, and sometimes "wooly" steering. Not this car; it's very tight, responsive, rattle free and has none of that steering play usually associated with this model. Also being the six cylinder M110 variant, powering the car through the very smooth automatic transmission with its almost imperceptible changes, makes this elegant Coupe feel rather special. It also has a handy turn of speed too; the twin cam, fuel injected M110 straight six gives a distinctive "kick in the back" at around 3500rpm, which still manages embarrass and surprise drivers of much newer cars.
This car is also supplied with the most comprehensive and detailed service history you could ever hope for, and in addition to an extremely well stamped service booklet, it comes with an enormous file of paperwork dating right back to 1985; every single invoice for repair and service work is there, along with lots of other supporting paperwork. Every job that has ever been completed has been logged in that 300+ page history that spans over 33 years, and shows quite clearly this car has been maintained regardless of cost. I very much doubt you'll find a W123, or any car of this age for that matter with such water tight and comprehensive provenance
So, as an all-round package taking into consideration mileage, provenance, condition and specification, I believe this to be one of the best, and most genuine W123's you could ever hope to find, and one which should prove to be a great investment with the way values of the W123 are going.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don't just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won't notice... I just couldn't do that.
