With the debut of the BMW M3 Sport Evolution, a direct competitor to the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2. 5-16, it became obvious that the 2. 5-16 needed an upgrade to stay competitive.
In March 1989, the «190E 2. 5-16 Evolution» was presented at the Geneva Motor Show.
The «Evo I», as it came to be called, featured a new body kit, with new spoilers and wider wheel arches. At the technical level it also had many changes, notably at brake, suspension and engine levels.
The «SLS» suspension allowed the height of the «Evo I» to be adjusted from a switch inside.
The power of the «Evo I» is similar to the 2. 5-16 ‘normal’ – 205 horsepower (151 kW) – however, the engine has been redesigned and now has a smaller stroke and larger diameter, allowing a higher rotation limit and performance at high speeds. Other changes included lighter rotating masses, improved lubrication, and more ‘aggressive’ camshafts.
Only 502 Evolution units were produced for approval in accordance with the DTM rules.
This 190E 2. 5-16 Evolution is fitted with rare 5-spoke «Evolution II» alloy wheels, however it is also accompanied by the original wheels.
Rare and in excellent condition!
