Mercedes Benz have produced their Sportlich-Leicht grand tourer continuously since 1954, from the early W198 and W121 Roadsters and Gullwing coupes to current R231 models, with their folding pan roofs and 9G-tronic auto boxes. Each and every model and version has been the consummate performer; a paragon of style and mechanical mastery; the archetypal grand tourer. Some have found iconic status on the crest of famous racing victories, others the chariot of choice for movie star, royalty and rocker. The 300SL Roadster is now out of reach to all but the very fortunate few, the Pagoda is reassuringly expensive, and the R107 of Hart to Hart fame is hot on its heals.
