Description
Highly original Raleigh RM1. It was sold to a Mr Dowsing of Ealing London, W5 on 20th November 1958. It was used by him for 4 years until he died. It was then stored in a garage until the next owner purchased it in 2003. He did nothing with it as he couldn't get the bike to run. I purchased it in June 2012 and ascertained that it needed new points and the carburettor was gummed up with stale petrol. I had the carburettor professionally cleaned and put a new float and tickler as well as gasket in, with the tank cleaned out and fresh fuel, the bike was a runner. I put new good quality continental tyres on (german) and tubes. The wheels and spokes are perfect. As a matter of course, I put new brake linings in front and rear, everything else on the bike showed little in the way of wear, due to the low mileage. The paint is original, as is all the chrome. It has never been pulled to pieces and restored as it has never needed to be. The lights were working but they seem intermittent which I believe is a wire inside the flywheel that needs to be looked at. The original saddle is perished but is perfectly usable and I like it as it is the original but you could put on a new saddle
It now starts easily when on the stand. I have ridden it at a couple of steam rallies and it has been well received. The paperwork that comes with it is all original to the bike, including the guarantee, original fold out brochure, a 33 page maintenance instruction book, Raleigh Moped the law and you brochure, V5 which is in my name. The registration number is original and non transferrable.
A very original and desirable RM1 which has a clutch! I am downsizing and no longer will have the time to use the Raleigh as I have other projects to attend to.
