SUMMARY
The 190E 2. 6 was once voted by a panel of motoring journalist as one of the best top ten cars of all time, which is quite some accolade, you have to agree!. Personally having bought, owned and sold more W201 190's than most (132 at the last count) I've always maintained the M103 Straight Six made the W201 the car it should always have been, and this 190E 2. 6 Sportline firmly reinforces that view. This has to be one of the best, if not indeed "the" best W201 190E 2. 6's available; the condition of this car is just simply breathtaking. It was recently exhibited on the Mercedes-Benz Club's stand at the 2017 Classic Car Show, where it attracted much positive attention, and despite many requests, wasn't for sale at the time, much to the disappointment of those wanting to own it. Knowing where to start with this vehicle is difficult as they so much to say, especially as its now a somewhat famous example, with quite an illustrious show winning history too.
I first came across this car back in 2015, via a well known member of the Mercedes Club; at that time it already had quite a few show wins under its belt, and naturally I ended up buying it, and not surprisingly sold it very quickly, soon after. The then new owner, also a Mercedes Club Member, and who has many years of experience in bringing vehicles to this standard, systematically went over the whole vehicle, and replaced just about every nut and bolt, in fact just about everything was replaced, cleaned or painted to bring it up to the magnificent concourse winning standard you see now. That process cost thousands of pounds, but moreover and what can’t be costed are the countless hours of meticulous work over many months. I again sold this car in of 2018 on behalf of the owner, however due to unforeseen and genuine change in circumstances; it has become available again.
This car was originally supplied new by Robinson's Autostar, Norwich at a cost of well over £27, 000 (invoice in vehicle's history file) to it's the first owners, who were the proprietors of Potters Leisure in Norfolk (home of the World Indoor Bowls Championships) The car was registered initially in the name of Brian Potter, and was subsequently registered by his wife a short time later. Each of the owners had assigned very expensive private registrations during their ownership, one I believe would now be valued at around £50, 000!.
The car was then sold some years later to a gentleman in Cornwall who lavished many thousands on this car; this included an engine, gearbox and full suspension rebuild. However due to an unforeseen change in circumstances, he was forced to sell the car in 2007, at which point it was bought by a well known member of the Mercedes Club, who cosseted the car, and who I originally bought the car from, some eight years later. During his ownership, he brought it to show standard, after which it received awards for Best Hardtop and Best Saloon/ Estate on the Mercedes Club stands at Tatton Park and Dalesman shows respectively. The car was also displayed in the showroom of a Mercedes Benz main dealership, where I'm told they requested it be removed as it was distracting buyers! To top all this, it was also featured in the Mercedes Club's magazine in 2015 too.
This vehicle has one of the largest, continuous and most comprehensive service histories I've ever seen, and the service booklet now contains 38+ entries. The fact that the vehicle has covered 118, 000 miles (although nothing for one of these) is somewhat irrelevant, given that the car has been essentially rebuilt over the last few years, and currently wants for absolutely nothing.
If you know these cars you'll know the W201 l90E 2. 6 Sportline has become a very sought after derivative of the W201 over the last few years, with values increasing very strongly year on year, being further helped up by stratospheric rises in the values of the sixteen valve ("Cosworth") models; this obviously bodes well for futures values of the W201 in general.
I could write page upon page about this car, but suffice to say if you want the best 190E 2. 6 available, this is most probably it. I concede that it's not particularly cheap, but then again the best never did come cheap, and considering the rise in values of the model since I sold this car back in 2015, we'll probably look back in another three years time and think I maybe should have bought it while they were still relatively affordable. This is a car that needs nothing doing to it; just get in, drive it to a few shows, and almost certainly drive away with a prize or two!
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
