SUMMARY
Supplied by Jackson’s Mercedes, St. Helier and registered on 29th January 1988 in Jersey, this very well appointed W201 190E 2. 6, spent the next 20 years of its life in the milder climate of the Channel Islands in the custody of just two owners (I have the States of Jersey registration documents to confirm this). It was subsequently brought over to the UK mainland in November 2009, by a prestige car dealership, and sold by them to a gentleman from Eastleigh, Hampshire, who owned the car right up to 2014, after which it was sold to a classic car enthusiast from Bridgend, South Wales, and from whom I bought the car from in December 2017. It’s actually quite rare to find a car of this age with a known ownership history, especially one from the Channel Islands, where earlier CI logbooks didn’t show the number of previous owners.
As previously mentioned, this is a very well specified W201 190E, and would have carried a very hefty price tag, even by today’s standards, and I estimate given the expensive options suchas Velour Upholstery, electric adjusting heated seats, illuminating sun visors etc. not coming cheap, those selected options would have pushed the price to around £26, 000; just to put that in perspective, in 1988 that kind of money would have bought you a decent semi detached house in this area back then!.
Typical of a channel Island’s vehicle, the mileage is very low at just 77, 000, but servicing has been kept up to by its conscientious owners, with the service booklet containing 16 stamps, mainly from main dealers. There’s also an A4 lever arch file containing invoices, old MOT’s and a full ownership history. I’ve also added to this as I’ve prepared the car for sale.
Although this was an excellent example when it came to me in Decmber 2017, the main attraction being the way the car drove, and the lack of corrosion, thanks to Jersey’s mild climate, it did, however require work to bring it a standard I was happy with. You have to bear in mind as good as it is, it’s still 31 years old, and things do wear out, albeit being a Mercedes-Benz of this era, things don’t wear out quite as quick as they would on others cars. So, here’s what I’ve done to bring it to the standard you see now:
Strip exterior and interior trim for paint
Remove rear window
Grind out corrosion under rear window re-fabricate affected areas
Paint to both sides & bonnet, paint under parcel shelf
Refit rear window
Refit trim using all new (genuine) clips, replace any damaged/ faded trim
Replace dashboard with a good used parts (original was cracked due to sun damage) Retain wood trim
Whilst dashboard removed, carry out following jobs:
• Replace heater matrix inlet pipe o-ring seal
• Remove old defunct alarm system, properly soldering up and applying heat shrink to affected wires
• Rewire and re-route boosted aerial cabling
• Rewire radio
• Replace dash speakers
• Replace dash bulbs with correct frosted bulbs
• Switch over glove box lock to match existing keys
• Lubricate Speedometer cable
• Replace damaged dash vents & surrounds

As you can see, this has been a long, expensive (spend excluding my many hours of labour is approximately £3500) but worthwhile process, and I’m very proud of the work I’ve done on this car, which I hope will see it on the road for another 31 years!. These incredibly well engineered cars are getting rarer by the day, however as good as they appear to be, even the ultra low mileage examples that have appeared out of the woodwork recently, will all require at least some work. I like to think with what I’ve done to this car, the new owner, over and above fuel/ insurance & tax, will not have to spend anything on this car for quite some time.
The 190E 2. 6 was once voted by a panel of motoring journalists as one of the best top ten cars of all time, however to anyone who knows the 190E 2. 6 that won’t really come as a big surprise, and as a result I think that values of the 190E 2. 6 will follow those of the 190E 16v (Cosworth). With that in mind, get one while you still can!.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don't just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won't notice…I just couldn't do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
Any other questions, please feel free to contact me via the details on my website. I'm a firstly and foremostly a true car enthusiast of many, many years, and a Mercedes Club Member, so it's a pleasure to meet and speak to like-minded people.
Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
Thanks for reading my advert!
Mark.
