Description

The 3500 GT was Maserati’s first production car and was a strong competitor for Ferrari and Aston Martin at that time. Construction started in late 1957 with the first handful leaving the factory before Christmas. Front disc brakes and limited slip differential became optional in 1959 and were standardised in 1960; rear discs became standard in 1962.

The 3500 GTI was introduced at the 1960 Salon International de l'Auto and became the first fuel-injected Italian production car. It used Lucas mechanical fuel injection and developed 232 bhp. The 5-speed gearbox which had been an available option since 1960 was made standard. The body had a lowered roofline and became somewhat longer; minor external changes appeared as well (new grille, rear lights, vent windows).

In total 2, 226 3500 GT coupés and convertibles were built between 1957 and 1964.

Constructed in 1962, this relatively late-production 3500 GTI was first owned by the Mayor of Milan, from March of that year. Originally equipped with Lucas fuel injection, it was returned to the factory in 1965 to have the fuel injection (which had proved troublesome) converted to triple Weber carburettors. In 1994, the coupe was sold at auction by Coys to a Belgian owner and re-registered in that country. In current ownership for the last 10 years, the Coupe has been subject to a comprehensive and detailed restoration.

The engine has been recently rebuilt with new pistons, shell bearings, chains and has been restored to original spec. with original parts. The Weber carbs and distributor have been reconditioned and the car set up on a rolling road - paperwork is available for runs before and after. (The complete, original fuel injection system comes with the car). The suspension has also been rebuilt to original spec. with Koni shock absorbers. Original equipment four-wheel disc brakes and five-speed ZF gearbox are fitted.
The engine and transmission are described as running beautifully, as we are confident a test drive will confirm.

The bodywork was professionally restored and new paintwork applied in the UK and is in showroom condition. The original stainless steel bumpers are in very good condition. New, original type Cibie headlamps have been fitted and all instruments have been reconditioned. The Borrani wire wheels have also been restored.

The interior, engine bay and boot have been fully restored and detailed – with new leather trim, seats, headlining, boot area and bonnet and boot lid insulation.

This is an extremely well restored example of Maserati's celebrated 3500 GTI, having been subject to comprehensive and detailed work and it is now resplendent in a metallic grey finish and red leather interior. It is also in exceptionally good driving condition.
The car comes with a history file detailing restoration; original Italian registration documents; ASI Plaque and documentation and some sales brochures.
