To all intents the Vincent single is really half a twin, its engine casting is virtually the same, and the one cylinder shares the twin's same bore and stroke and produces almost exactly half the power: 28 bhp @ 5800 rpm versus 55 @ 5700 plus it shares the same brakes and frame, thus it is somewhat over engineered and considered a very pleasant and more leisurely motorcycle to ride.
A copy of the original Works Order form on file show this Comet was collected by Ross Motors, Hinckley, Leicestershire early January 1951 and through research of both the Vincent Owners Club archives and the DVLA, it's fairly certain that it was first registered GNR 754 and delivered to a Mr. F. Rimmington of Leicester on 22 January 1951. The ownership and locality of the Comet then transfer to the USA and into the hands of Mr Casey of Northport, Long Island, New York. There are references on file from the next owner, Mike FitzSimons when he acquired it from Casey with just 4, 000 miles in 1975 and there is a note to say he rode it home and kept it for twenty years using it sparingly! Worthy of note, is that FitzSimons was at the time a well known collector and the Bonhams motorcycle representative in the USA.
During 1997 it was sold to its next owner Paul Hoffman, again a well known collector from New Jersey, and by now also the owner of the Black Shadow (which is also available and detailed on my website) thus on his death in 2001, both Vincents were acquired by Herb Harris, who had amassed the Harris Vincent Gallery in Austin, Texas. .
Since 2004 its been in the hands of a UK collector and on display in a private museum. Now registered with the age-related plate 15* U* D, it remains completely original and unrestored and has covered less than 9, 000 miles since it left the Vincent factory in 1951.
A good deal of documentation accompanies this unique motorcycle, beginning with copies of the Works Order Form & engine specification, Road Test Report, Completion Note and finally the Certificate of Authenticity issued via the Vincent Owners Club.
There is an extremely rare opportunity to become the owner of what must be one of the most original Vincent Comets in existence plus a similarly original 1949 Vincent Black Shadow which has been its companion for over twenty years! Completely road ready, as recently motd and prepared for sale.
