Vanden Plas 1500 – Totally Restored/ Superb
Known universally as the 'Vanden Plas Allegro', but officially known simply as the VDP 1500, this car is a prime example of B/ L badge engineering. The motoring press gave the car a mixed reception when new BUT it managed to sell healthily and make handsome profits for British Leyland during its six-year production run. Today the 1500 with 5 speed manual gearbox represents one of the best kept secrets of classic motoring – luxury specification for less than the cost of a Morris 1000.
Mr Collinson purchased his Vanden Plas 1500 from Lesley’s Car Sales Ltd, Ventnor on the Isle of Wight on 1st July 1976 for the princely sum of £2, 717. 25 including an extra door mirror and undersealing. He kept the car for the next 24 years at which time he sold her to his neighbour. The VDP was sold in 2015 by the second owner – he was 82 - and a full two year nut & bolt restoration followed supported by a five page written summary and a whole album pictures.
Today the car is a real testament to the skill, knowledge and commitment of the team that brought her back to life….. the standard of workmanship and attention to detail are outstanding. Everything has been replaced or refurbished and on the road the car is a real pleasure to drive. Acceleration is brisk and the five speed gearbox linked with sharp steering/ brakes means the car copes very well with modern road conditions.
The interior is like a miniature Rolls Royce and in outstanding condition – headlining, carpets, seats, wood veneers etc are all excellent. The history folder contains original sales broacher from Leslie’s, bill of sale, handbook, letter from previous owner, various invoices/ MOT’s and the full story of the restoration that cost far in excess of vehicle value.
Finished in original Astral Blue with a mileage of 56, 000 miles this stunning VDP really needs to be seen/ driven to be fully appreciated and is ready to be used, enjoyed & win prizes for the lucky new owners
