SUMMARY
When the R-Class was launched, it was sold by Mercedes as a “Prestige Sports Tourer” however I think that classification really doesn’t do the model justice as its capable of so much more, and can probably handle pretty much any situation modern motoring could throw at it. This has been my car since January; I bought it from six (more mature) gentlemen, who every year club together and buy a car, promptly take it to their garage to have every niggle sorted, and then take it on a road trip. On their trip in 2018, this R-Class was driven to Dubrovnik, returning back to the UK via The Munich Beer Festival; a trip of some 3000 miles which it completed with ease.
In the nine months I’ve owned this car I’ve become very attached to it, and even though its fulfilled the purpose I originally bought it for, I’m still quite reluctant to let it go, as no other car I can think of can match the capabilities of the R-Class…it has four wheel drive capabilities, seats seven in comfort, returns superb fuel economy yet has a top speed of around 140 mph and can get to 60mph in around 7 seconds. I’m a big fan of cars like this that are both a bit different and much underrated, and I think for that reason, the W251 R-Class may just become a classic. We’ve actually just returned from a 600 mile round trip to South Wales, in which it effortlessly transported six of us in comfort, yet still returned an average of 38mpg – quite amazing for a vehicle of this size and power.
It goes without saying that this is a very well maintained vehicle, and its three previous owners have all been equally sympathetic, observing the correct maintenance schedules. Due to the very nature of the model, there are lots of neglected R-Classes out there now, that have been used and abused by careless owners.
So, if you’re looking for something that’s big, fast and economical, that’s as happy on the motorway as it is in a muddy field, and will still stand out from the crowd (in a good way) look no further. I’ll really miss this car when its gone, and its highly probable I’ll buy another at some stage in the future, as the W251 is truly unique among its peers.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the most of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too.
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don't just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won't notice…I just couldn't do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
