SUMMARY
Supplied new by Speeds of Stratford-upon-Avon, and registered on 6th March 1997, this is among the very last of W124’s to roll off the production line, and as such doesn’t suffer the now infamous engine wiring loom and throttle body problems, which plagued the earlier final facelift cars, made 1993 onwards. Many of the other glitches of earlier cars have been ironed out too; they always say it’s always best to buy the last of a model range for this very reason.
Finished in gleaming 744 Brilliant silver with Black leather interior, this car is the epitome of class; it really is a truly superb, low mileage example of this much sought after and extremely elegant full four seat, W124 Cabriolet (or A124 in Mercedes nomenclature.) She’s had just previous owners throughout its 22 year life, all of whom have all been extremely sympathetic and diligently kept up with the maintenance schedule; the service booklet contains an impressive 19 stamps, and comes accompanied by an additional A4 Lever arch file containing further supporting documentation including service invoices, old MOT’s and a full record of the vehicle’s previous owners.
Condition is absolutely superb, both on top and underneath with none of the corrosion associated which the W124 can suffer from. The same theme is also carried on with the interior too, which is a very cosseting place to be, and extremely comfortable too. As you would rightly expect, drive is absolutely sublime, and it still oozes quality in spades, remember this car cost around £40, 000 when new, and that was 22 years ago in 1997! What’s also impressive is although the M111 (2. 2 litre 16 Valve) can propel the car to almost double the motorway speed limit, it returns superb fuel economy. Just as an example, when I collected this car, it returned around 40mpg on the 140 mile trip home.
So, if you’re looking for one of these legendary Cabriolets, this has got to be one of the best examples out there; just to give you an idea of the quality of this car, it was sold in 2015 (at 69K miles) for almost £15, 000, back when the W124 Cabriolet wasn’t worth quite as much as it is now. Since then values have appreciated strongly by around 15-20% year on year. Now at just 70, 900 miles, I’m able to offer this car at £12, 995, which I think it’s quite a bargain, given its condition. If I were to store it over the winter, it would be advertised at quite a bit more in the spring.
I think the W124 Cabriolet one of the most elegant cars to grace our roads and is probably one of the only of a handful of convertible cars that still manages to retain its dignity (and that of the driver) with the roof down. The A124 is also one of the safest and most rigid cabriolets on the market too, with safety features that where light years ahead of its contemporaries. For these reasons, it’s already proven to be a classic, and my feeling is that a car like this, if kept in its current condition could easily be worth £20K in the not so distant future.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the most of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too.
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don't just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won't notice…I just couldn't do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
