The Alfa Romeo Alfetta was a bit of a revolution when it arrived on the market. Available as a coupe or saloon, the innovation was in the drivetrain which was a transaxle layout to help with weight distribution and improve handling. A set up usually reserved for more exotic and expensive machinery.
This 1980 saloon in Metallic Brown with beige interior has had a full nut and bolt restoration and is in, what can only be described as, ‘as-new’ condition.
Previously owned and restored by the President of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club Roma, the care and workmanship of the restoration is outstanding. For example, many of the unavailable panels such as the rear arches and bootlid were perfectly reproduced by hand on an English wheel.
And the same quality and attention carries through to every other part of this beautiful Alfetta. The interior is flawless, the engine bay is immaculate and the underside is the same story.
The body wasn’t the only subject of the restoration, either. The 1600 twincam engine, 5 speed manual gearbox, differential and brakes were all rebuilt, too, and the result is a car that is hugely rewarding to drive. The engine is sweet with its twin choke Dellorto carbs and the car is beautifully balanced.
Overall, this is a stunning example of an underrated Italian classic, with over €40k spent on the restoration, and must be the finest in Ireland, if not Europe.
