SUMMARY

This gorgeous W124 200TE was originally supplied by H. L Gorner, Wigan and initially registered by them as one of their own Demo vehicles, before being sold to a lady from Preston who kept the car for around 18 months. It was subsequently sold in October 1991 through Mercedes' Used Car Scheme to the long term owner's company, before being transferred into his personal ownership two years later in 1993. As is usally the story with Mercedes of this era, owning a car with the three pointed star at the end of the bonnet was the realisation of a dream for the the owner, so as you'd expect the car was held in extremely high esteem, and I'm told it was never used in poor weather, was serviced more than required and was always kept garaged when not in use, confirmed by the bright orange dash needles; the needles on cars left outside tend to fade to yellow with exposure to sunlight. Sadly the gentleman passed away in late 2019, so the family had to sell the vehicle, but equally hoped the car would go to a good home where the car would be afforded the same level of esteem as it had enjoyed in the last 29 years.

Finished in 702 Smoke Solver, with Black Quartz Cloth interior, the condition of this car is nothing short of stunning; W124 estates are very rarely, if at all, found in this kind of condition and with such low mileage, as most were victims of their own success (the W124 is an epic load lugger and long distance cruiser!) This car still even smells like a new Mercedes-Benz of this era – that distinctive smell will never leave my memory, after having collected a brand new Mercedes 230E, for my boss, on 1st August 1989; as a car mad 20 year old that was a pivotal moment which began in my long associating with these cars, and is one of the reasons I’ve now been professionally involved with these cars for going on 20 years .

I’m always reluctant to say, this may be the lowest mileage W124 Estate on offer, as there may possibly be one languishing in a barn or garage somewhere, but in this case I’m sure it’s the lowest mileage one currently on offer. Moreover, low mileage is one thing, but condition is another, and having provenance to match completes what I call “the trinity” that is low mileage, superb condition and fantastic service history and provenance.

As you’d right expect, the car drives like an absolute dream and just like I remember that brand new W124 did back in 1989. It’s smooth, quiet and surprisingly lively, and despite what many may think, it’s certainly not underpowered, with performance being almost imperceptible from that of a good 230E; in reality there’s actually only 14 bhp difference between the two, and a low mileage, well maintained 200TE, will always perform better than a less well sorted 230E, its also considerably more lively than any of the naturally aspirated diesels and almost as economical too, returning very respectable fuel economy. I’m sure one drive of this beautiful car, and even the most sceptical will be instantly converted.

MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES

MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the majority of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too.

MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.

Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
