SUMMARY
Originally a demo vehicle for Normand of Mayfair, who are probably the most prestigious Mercedes Dealership in the UK, this highly desirable 190E 2. 6 Sportline cost an eye watering £34, 089. 88 when new, having been specified with over £10, 000 of optional extras, making this quite some car. It was later sold to a rather well heeled gentleman from Reigate, Surrey and has in total had just three previously keeper since, all were in the leafy parts of the South.
As this car has spent the majority of its life in the South of England, and has been garaged during most of that time (as confirmed by the bright Orange dash needles) the bodywork is in superb order, with the underside being more akin to that of a much younger vehicle, and I doubt you’d find many as nice, in terms of condition.
Service history and provenance are also exemplary, with the service book containing 17 stamps, 14 of them from Main Dealers, the rest being from respected specialists, with a major 36, 000 mile service (including an transmission fluid and filter) having been carried out less than 1500 miles ago, however as this was a couple of years ago, the vehicle will be serviced pre-sale, and another stamp will be added to the service booklet. Also supplied is a thick A4 lever arch file of supporting documentation, including all old MOT certificates, lots of invoices, and even most of the old tax discs too.
After the 190E Evo and 190E 16v (Cosworth) , the 190E 2. 6 Sportline is now theW201 to have, and was recently voted as one of the best top ten cars of all time, by a panel of motoring journalists, which is quite some accolade. I personally think the driving experience is much more pleasant and relaxing, than it is with its 16v counterparts. Remember the old adage here; BHP turns heads, but torque turns wheels, and this car demonstrates that philosophy perfectly. The power, or rather torque from the M103 straight six, comes in from low down in the rev range, and is hence is much more useable, and although on paper the 16 valve cars produce more BHP, their performance, by the very nature of their multivalve engine, is all at the top of the rev range, so you always feel like you have to thrash them, whereas with the 2. 6, it delivers it performance in a much more dignified style. Don’t get me wrong, the 190E 2. 6 will still go like the clappers if asked, and the Sportline suspension setup, handles the bends with minimal fuss, to give a thoroughly relaxing but exhilarating diving experience.
So in summary, a stunning example, of a highly desirable variant of the W201, in a gorgeous colour combination. Recent stratospheric rises in the prices of the 190E 2. 3-16/ 2. 5-16 “Cosworth” models have had a knock on down the W201 model range, and with the 190E 2. 6 being at the top of the tree, it’s likely values will rise, especially with record low interest rates, its envisaged by many that investors will again look towards classic cars.
Finally, the vehicle is currently carrying a valuable three number, three letter number plate, valued at between £1500-£2000. This is not included in the sale, but is available by separate negotiation.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the majority of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
